I've always wondered where the different terminology comes from. As far as I know, most people in my region (South Australia) call them bats.

What do you call them in your region?

We use bats for table tennis and rackets for badminton...

Here is what I mistakenly answered in another thread:

It seems that people largely from other countries than Oz will refer to it as a paddle. Around here I have not heard it called that.


Now to add to that for this question.

Racket is usually reserved for the regulatory and commercial table tennis ecosystem from the ITTF to the manufacturers.

I use racquet for other sports' implements, usually with strings attached. (Tennis, squash, badminton to name but a few). I have, however, heard people in these parts use racquet for table tennis at least occasionally.

I think bat is pretty much universal in Aus. I’ve lived and played in Vic, NSW and Qld. Rarely but occasionally heard it referred to as a racquet, usually by a newcomer to the sport. Never paddle.

According to Wikipedia;

"The ITTF uses the term "racket",[27] though "bat" is common in Britain, and "paddle" in the U.S. and Canada."

Makes you wonder why the ITTF would use a term that's not the most common in the biggest English-speaking countries. :o

Table tennis shops in Britain usually use "blade".

A lot of local league players I speak to use "bat" and don't make up their own setup and generally aren't that interested in equipment.

My dad and I most frequently use the word "paddle" with "racket" coming in second place.

Indonesia use "bet", or "bet kosongan / telanjang" (empty / naked) for blade without rubber. :)

I have one friend who fences, and he laughs at the word blade in table tennis terms (I didn't say he was a close friend). But, the most common typo on the fora is "balde" instead of "blade", and I half jokingly feel that that would be a good new word for the wooden bit. No rubber, and no confusion with swords, except from the one company that calls itself Sword.

But completely clothed, it's a bat.

My UK experience is always "bat" for the full setup and blade when no rubbers attached
