I use "Blade" without the rubbers.

I use ....Both "Bat" and "Paddle."

I probably say "paddle" to people I don't know to avoid confusion. Sometimes people don't know what I mean by "Bat." I probably use bat more often to people I know well.

"Racket" seems least appropriate because to me like a racket should have strings like a tennis, squash, or badminton racket. To me, "Paddles" are mostly solid striking surface with no strings. You would never spank a child (back in the olden days) with a racket. You would never use a racket to propel your boat.

In the US, paddle is more common to disambiguate from a Baseball Bat. In fact, in American sports, a baseball bat is the only kind of sport-associated bat there is really.

If you say "bat", 100% of every American born here will picture this:

Or this:

But never a TT Bat.

And we invented the game. So: definitive. ;)

... So when I arrived at the pier, I put down my paddle, picked up my blade and without raising a racket entered into the fray not batting an eyelid, although my knees felt rubbery ...

And this is a racquet:

As opposed to a racket:

Really? :o So what do they call a bat without rubbers?

Ah sorry, I took your question to be referring to bat's without rubbers. If you mean the full setup, it's usually bat.

You also called it "Wiff Waff" back then. This disqualifies you from anything "definitive." Haha :D

In my head, probably due to my American cultural bias, a bat is more club-like than it is flat. Even a cricket bat is more club-like than paddle-like. Still, I like the term "bat" more than "paddle." I just know it causes confusion if I use that term.

A paddle belongs in the water propelling a boat or canoe of some description.

How did paddle ever get to be linked with table tennis?

I run into this issue when people call their car wheels "rims." Wheels and rims are not the same thing.

I run into this issue when sportscasters says a players has wheels. Wheels and legs are not the same thing.

We call it blade without rubbers, bat or paddle or racket with rubbers, racquet or stringed racket for badminton / tennis / squash.

It really really irks me when people talk about Gears for a rubber when only motored equipment come with Low, mid, High and reverse gearing!!!

"What's in a name?" As the Earl of Oxford once wrote. :geek:

Prior to becoming an official game, it may have been called many things. Only Boris (the $%^&) Johnson still uses Whiff-Whaff. And he will be the first against the wall after the revolution.

But this is OT. I like those who use the words "floor" and "covering", or is that just Google Translate? I hope not.

Table Tennis is considered a racket (Racquet) sport, and is the number one played racket sport in the world.

Thus logic states that it must be called a racket ;)!

Bat, Racket, Paddle, call it what ever the hell you want, just don't call it late for supper!

I'm quite sure I could paddle my canoe with one of my "paddles".. Just need to wait for the ice to melt and we'll give this theory a try!
