Hi All,

I'm currently using Timo Boll ALC with Tenergy 05 on FH, looking for a new short pips rubber on BH.

What are the best short pips for aggressive play close to the table? Taking all balls early when they're rising and driving/smashing them back through spin, returning serves straight through (even backspin serves), putting the opponent under pressure etc? No chopping away from the table, just an occasional touch close to the net.

I assume these will have to be classic non-spinny pips? What would be the best sponge thickness? For hitting through spin and low-arc are thinner ones better? Soft or hard?

Here are the ones I've tried so far:
1) BTY Challenger Attack 1.7 - I liked the thickness as it tended to bottom out nicely and help driving/smashing, but was a tad too spinny with no deception
2) BTY Speedy P.O. 2.1 - a bit harder sponge and less spinny than challenger attack, low-arc and flat-hitting certainly possible but less control due to quite a thick sponge
3) TSP Spectol 2.15 (classic) - worst of the three, the sponge was too soft with very non-linear speed - on slow shots the sponge was essentially damping and slowing the ball down, on faster shots the ball got catapulted with a high arc and little control

Possible candidates:
I) BTY Speedy P.O. 1.7
II) TSP Spectol Speed 1.5-1.8?

Can you recommend the best pips (incl. thickness) for the game I'd like to play?

Why not go for a more modern SP, one that's been designed for the 40+ plastic ball?

Butterfly Impartial XS (or XB)
Victas VO > 102 (or 101 or 103)

Both come in thinner sponges like 1.7mm. You should know if your style favors vertical or horizontal pip alignment and select your SP accordingly. Lots written on OOAK about that.

Mima Ito's BH rubber? Nittaku Moristo I think, not sure what verison.

Moristo SP could also be good for what you want. I have only tried it in 1.4 red which was easy to play with but I felt it would be better in 1.8mm as the sponge is quite soft. In the end staying with medium pips as the player I was counter hitting against found it much harder to loop against Keiler as opposed to Moristo SP. With the SP you have to rely on speed and placement as there is little disruptive effect or sink. Spinlord Waran in 1.8mm would be another option for all out attack plus can be difficult to return as hits bounce very low.
