Among the sports considered the most vulnerable is modern pentathlon. Taekwondo, the Korean martial art that has been in the Olympics since 2000, has also been mentioned as being among the sports in potential danger. The future of wrestling, badminton and table tennis have also been the subject of speculation.

Hard to believe that wrestling will go. That is one of the oldest of Olympic sports. Show me a sport that pits one human being's brains, strength, and speed against an opponent in a more direct way than wrestling. I can't think of one.

Olympics Moves to Drop Wrestling in 2020

Wrestling, one of the most ancient and traditional Olympic sports, was dropped from the Summer Games in a stunning and widely criticized decision Tuesday by the International Olympic Committee. Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling will be contested at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, but they will be excluded from the 2020 Summer Games, for which a host city has not yet been named, the Olympic committee said Tuesday.

I think that it sounds good in theory but the matches i watched seemed to come with some coin toss and 1 up and 1 down scenario,

Yeah, MNNB, about one hour after I posted my opinion, I saw it on the internet. Having wrestled for 8 years (high school & college) and coaching a few years, I am really disappointed in this decision :( . So instead, they add golf. Geeez.... |(
Rodderz, the coin toss is done to determine who gets to start a particular period in the "top" or "down" position. They start the match in a neutral position, and then in the subsequent periods, each takes their turn starting at the top or down position. Some wrestlers excel at the neutral position, others in the top or down positions. This way, an even chance is given to the guy who excels at one position or another. Anyway, I am majorly bummed about this, :@ and will be watching LOTS less of the Olympics in 2020. Probably just table tennis.

If the games were ever to go back to Athens, Greece (say in 2020), then not having wrestling will be a slap in their face.
