... you can count every single net or edge that you didn't return in a game.
... you think more about returning the ball than putting it away.
... people hate playing against you, but like drilling with you.

...your single games to 11 commonly run over 30 minutes
...you have a strange urge to be friendly and jump and bark anytime a stranger walks in.

*facepalm* to that second one, I know.....

Isn't that why the expedite rule was invented?

Mind you, I can remember before learning all the rules, starting a pennant match one night (3 against 3, best of 11 rubbers, best of 3 games to 21) where I started a best of 3 one night and came back the next night to finish it. I won, but can't remember if it was 2 straight :) :) We both pushed or chopped, so it was a matter of consistency - and the umpire keeping their eyes open.

The expedite rule always slips my mind completely :oops:

And that's awesome! Albeit boring for other players and the umpire :P

Haha I would love to play against a retriever one of these days.

... you just love hitting those little balls because it's so satisfying just keeping them alive;

... the other dogs at your club know exactly where you've marked your territory;

... you get labelled, "Mr Nice Guy", but not necessarily for the nicest reasons;

... you have to keep checking that you're taking the right medication;

... the coach at your club says to new members, "That guy over there will be your hitting partner until you can get away"

That's only a little unkind. I did say that people would like drilling with a retriever, but, but, ... :(

So that's why I beat you the last time we played :) Nothing to do with all those little bruises all over my body from the ball ...

Well, I have had a top veteran player that hadn't seen me in a while comment as he was coming past a match I was playing: "I see that you are still playing your charming type of game", quite possibly with a pinch of sarcasm.

Sorry if any of my responses seemed too unkind. Anyway, I do think retrievers have innately tough skin.

You know you are a retriever if ... any snide remark or ill-tempered display from your opponent is countered with a casual shrug of the shoulders or discrete smirk to the crowd.

...club members hate you more than they hate LP players and you have snide "under the breath" remarks that you don't play "real" TT

...you despise having nets made against you (by an attacker) more than the others, and profess more apology when you get one to balance out your own behaviour :lol:

...you hit the table edge (particularly the back edge) a ridiculous amount (in other players eyes :P )

Were you an inverted retriever in a former life? If so, tone down the forehand, get rid of the pips on the backhand & welcome back to the fold :)

Or are these reactions that a "friend" has to inverted retrievers? :) :)

I have had the remark that I don't play real table tennis said to my face by a frustrated attacker, & I do get a ridiculous amount of nets and edges, particularly the on the end line.

Haha, nope! I just have a "friend" who is a classic retriever and this is how it rolls for him. I've seen it for years and come face to face with it many a time myself. I've technically never beaten him (except for the time he "cheated" himself to a win by causing a ruckus to get a let when I went 10-8 up in the 5th set, bringing me back to 9-8 and I was so exhausted, the "timeout" zapped me of what was needed to sail home - but of course there's more to that story). Then there was the time I lead him 2-0 and he got approximately 15 edges across the next 3 sets to win 11-9 in the 5th....with an edge!

oh and that reminds me of one more....

....your opponent teammates fight amongst themselves about who will play you last cos no-one ever has enough energy left by then! :P
