It's a credit to the guy in your league to overcome injury in that way.

Oh I totally agree Anti. All I'm saying is its bloody confusing, cos he changes so swiftly that half the time you don't even recognise that he has done it. Can mean you're playing totally the wrong shot at him. Its a rare skill I think. I can play left-handed, but have never been forced to do it enough to get as good as my right. Not that I'm wishing for that lol. I don't even think I'd be comfy changing hands anyway, I'd be scared of dropping the bat!

I had back surgery six weeks ago, played today (i have been playing for the last ten days, carefully). For the first time in a long time felt really good, was not limited by pain, could loop freely, serve, push. Amazing. I am at about 90%.

That's coming along very quickly Baal. Gotta be happy with the recovery, just be careful. Imagine you're only at 75% for a while.

Everything went well today. Getting more movement back in my elbow is my priority now.

I asked the surgeon how long I should wait before I start to play table tennis or golf or tennis again. He said I should wait four to five months from the date of my operation for all of them - no sooner.

I agree with Reb, be careful Baal and good luck with your continuing recovery.

Hey Debater,

I came across this topic when searching for advice about my recent elbow injury.

I fractured my radial head and coronoid process around 7 weeks ago, I was put in a cast for 4 weeks and have been performing physiotherapy for a couple of weeks now. My range of movement is pretty poor but I can hit a table tennis ball without much pain.

I'd love to know how you got on with your recovery and how long it took before you returned to playing table tennis?

In short, it took about 5 months before I started to play properly again and then it was a gradual path back to playing league matches. My playing style had to change and so did my equipment to take account of the lack of flexibility in my elbow and the lack of strength in my arm. My standard also dropped but I did a develop a better understanding of tactics and styles of play because I had to to compensate for my elbow.

It wasn't until I had a second operation to remove the wires in my elbow - about 2 and 1/2 years later - that I started playing free of pain and with almost full mobility - I'll never get it all back. After that second operation my style changed again and so did my equipment. In a way I've never returned to the level I was before and I'll never play the same style. But I count myself lucky to have recovered as well as I have.

So you can return quite quickly, but for me at least there were constant changes to my standard, style and the equipment I used whilst my elbow recovered.

If in doubt ask your physio and don't go by others experience eg me. Everyone is different and I'm no doctor.

Hope this helps and good luck with your recuperation.
