I'm sorry if I posted this question elsewhere but as I was searching up the Victas 401 I saw that some reviews led me here and haggisv has personally used the rubber and it really interests me as it says it's for aggressive defenders in it's ability to chop and top spin. Would you say it does what it says? I was thinking this could be the rubber I get in 1.8. There was also the 402 limber but very little reviews.

I've been playing with a cream transcend 2.0 on both sides and an ALL blade. I want to try and get a rubber to 1.8, I really enjoy watching videos of attackers vs modern defense and how they chop the ball from far away or quickly switch to attacking with top spin, it's awesome. I would need to practice it more but it does look fun to me, would need to practice that far from the table chop though. What rubber could I go for and should it be 1.5 or like 1.8? I have searched and seen people either recommend Nittaku Moristo DF, Tackiness chop 2, or Yanus DF oh and I've heard of Victas VS 401 or 402, maybe rakza 7 soft, I would like for the rubber to not be too slow since I also like attacking when the chance arises  , but I know these rubbers can be slow. I wouldn't know which to go for honestly or if there are other options. I have heard of long and short pip rubbers but I don't think they are for me since I like having the same rubber on both sides. Could I still play modern defense with inverted rubbers? I know people like Muramatsu have short pimples on one side but inverted on his forehand. My strongest hand is backhand and have the most control with it and power. Help for my next rubber would be a big help thanks for everything.

Edit: I was thinking Mark V 1.8 could work since it's slower at this point or a variation of Mark V. The Vega Japan is also on my radar but on an ALL-Def blade and it looks pretty good.

“DCFanboy” I use a Victas V > 401 1.5mm on the FH of one of my setups & Victas V > 01 Limber 1.8mm on the FH of my other setup. They are both produce a lot of spin but the reason for the difference is even though they are both Balsa blades the Limber (which is softer) is needed on the second because it has a carbon fibre ply this makes the blade harder & this help counter that issue. Both rubbers give great results. 8) I have used Rakza 7 but it didn’t give anywhere as much spin. :n:

As a general guideline, with the modern game (ball, rubbers, style, scoring), a person who wants to be able to attack wouldn't use an inverted rubber much thinner than 1.8.

I'm not sure if it was your post I responded to last week, about 1.8mm rubbers. My advice remains: I significantly doubt that after a week of use you would feel any difference at all, or find any change in your ability to play as a modern defender by shaving 200 microns of sponge from your sponge.

As for the rubber you mention. Yep - excellent choice. I know of several players who use it, and experienced coaches and players have recommended it for modern defence. But: I could say the same about several dozen other rubbers.

Honestly - your rubber choice won't be the determining factor. As long as you don't pick something extreme - very fast, very slow, design for a particular specialist play style - you'll be fine.

As for playing modern defence with 2 x inverted - of course you can. I'd say most modern defenders I know use long pimples on their backhand, but that's obviously not necessary.

Seriously - don't over think or over research this. Buy something and spend your time and money practicing with it. After a few months you'll have much more meaningful experiences and a better idea of how you're developing as a player.

Dc.A very usefull old guy plays with tac c (original)2mm f/h 1.5 b/h.he chops from both sides and causes problems with his spin.He also has a good attack.Could be worth checking out e bay for second hand defence rubbers.I like to chop with 2mm yasaka anti power antispin. The ball travels low over the net .i played last night with a guy who uses stiga chop and drive in 1.5mm.he played excellent with that.

well, Bluefire JP3 or Tenergy 80 supposed to be a modern allrounder rubber at 1.7 mm - 1.8 mm

I love Tack 2, but I am afraid that may too slow for proper attack.

I might be wrong, but are you a beginning player, DCFanboy? In that case just ordinary rubbers like Mark V, Sriver, Mendo (Energy) will do for now. 1,8 and 1,5 for the more defensive side (FH or BH). Don't go for tensors (yet) like the Vega Japan. Learn the strokes: then change the equipment accordingly.

Batwings.

Available in 1.5, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2mm (unusual for Chinese rubber). Currently on sale, $8.26 for two sheets including shipping! Get some of each thickness, and try them all, it's cheap enough!

Or get this combo (Batwings + Sanwei M8):

Can't beat the price, $15.96 for a blade and 2 sheets (shipping included), and they'll glue it on for you, too. The blade is excellent, slow enough to chop with. Don't know if I'd go with 1.8, though, I don't have trouble chopping with 2.2 using this blade.

Do ask them about sponge hardness options - you want the medium sponge (~40-42 degrees).

Oh awesome, I have in mind Marder II or Victas for this modern defense choices. Do you think the Rakza 7 on a blade like Victas Koji Mats VKM for modern defense or like others suggested and not use tensor rubbers just yet? I could try the VKM/ VKM offense on the Victas 401 instead or use an ALL blade like Yasaka Sweden Extra. I don't know if you have tried Spinlord Marder II but it looks pretty good and was thinking it would be nice on an ALL blade in 1.8 I'm not sure if I need a def blade like VKM/offense but I have heard very good things about it, I'm just thinking how a def blade would affect my ability to switch into being offensive. If you have any other ALL or DEF blade recommendations I don't mind hearing them, I just want something that I can also top spin with as well for attacking :D. The only thing that has me worried is since I've only played with softer rubbers I don't know how a harder rubber like Victas 401 would be like, so I got Marder II as a softer choice. Thanks you for your information :D

Thanks for the info I've been holding off on buying rubbers to wait for some suggestions, I'm only worried about it being a harder rubber as I've only used soft rubber and thought the Marder II could be good for modern defense and a softer rubber. I am asking now what blade to use for these rubbers, I can either get a Yasaka Sweden Extra(ALL) or a Victas Koji Matsushita(DEF)/Victas Koji Matsushita Offense. Thanks for your advice.

I wouldn't say I'm a beginner but do you think the Marder II would be good as it's price is roughly cheaper than Mark V and it's a modern defense rubber. I can get in 1.8 mm I just don't know if I want to use an ALL blade like Yasaka Sweden Extra or a DEF blade like Victas Koji Matsushita/ VKM Offense. Maybe I can get that over the Victas 401 as I have no clue how a harder rubber would play except for using some others set ups at the club but couldn't like the harder rubbers at the moment of play, probably would need more time getting accustom to it.

I liked Marder. Good modern all round rubber, and excellent value.

On an all round blade, this would be a perfect place to start.

I played for a couple of years with slowish defensive blades (tibhar defence plus). They help with feeling and control, and tame fast rubbers but I was able to attack find with it. But with something like Marder and the YSE I think you'd have a lovely, balanced setup that can do everything and won't hold you back or constrain you.

Well, I advise against the Marder II. I tried it a couple of sessions on my regular blade in 2.0. It's controlled and chops are great, but attacks are too slow. The sponge is too absorbing when attacking. Tested on my Joo blade, which isn't a slow blade at all.

What's your level then, DCFanboy?

Ah thanks for the input, yea I'm debating getting the Joo blade, or Victas Koji Matsushita Offensive since they are good modern defense blades that can also attack. I don't know my rating but I have used Cream Transcend 2.0 on my all blade and other rubbers. I've played for more than half a year but recently got into playing more seriously. Do you know other rubbers that would do well with what I'm looking for that could fit with the Joo or VKMO blade? Hell even using an ALL blade is fine, I just wanted to try some other rubbers and I've tried the Mark V on some friends set ups it's good just wanted to see if I tried something else but you think it's fast enough to attack on a defensive blade? What about that Mark V HPS then or regular Mark V VKMO/Joo? Maybe I should go with the Victas 401 and VKMO after all.

Now I have two conflicting points saying Marder is too slow for attacking but you say it's good set up  I might just go with the Victas 401 unless I know of a different rubber, or go with original or variation of Mark V, just dont want it to gold back on offensive capabilities.
