Please keep your answers to just one thing from:

- a playing point of view and

- a spectator point of view.

Thank you

In comparison to other sports, do you think there are more high-level egoistic and obnoxious people who play table tennis?

I must admit, over the years, I've met some pretty weird people in table tennis (both in person and online). Not that they were necessarily "high level players", but obnoxious and egoistic isn't uncommon. Maybe because it's often a nocturnal game, played in basements long after most people are asleep. Or maybe it's just that way on college campuses. One or two of these people might actually be known to at least a few of you (at least, those who were around when rec.sport.table-tennis was the place to hang out online).

I agree that Table Tennis does seem to be a magnet for characters* who take themselves and the sport too seriously. That's probably the worst thing about the sport.

Illegal serves, I did a check, of the 6 culprits in my division, they range from 60 - 85%!!

not a strange correlation there hey, players acting as umpires little more than scorers,
one I watched the other day was only looking at the net on serve, path, I despair,

it is unenforceable, flag it up and WW3 breaks out for a lovely evening with an awful atmosphere!

Ohhh yeah :-p for sure it feels like a much higher ratio comparatively to other sports I've played with semi-serious to decent athletes. TT has some awesome and wonderful players. But such a lot of dickish "players" who make you suffer. Cheating, not cooperating, refusing to help you train, being just lazy :-( , bad attitude, etc. Somehow tt attracts these several kinds of d-bags :-S

It’s the constant lets at my club that get annoying. Balls roll over so often that it’s sometimes hard to finish a point. Then when no let comes for a while, I start looking for one to come. It definitely affects my concentration in a negative way.

If it's clearly an illegal service the guy is an asshole anyways, he is trying to get away with it and we shouldn't reward that. If I were teammates with someone like that I would make it very clear that I don't like it and that I won't defend him when it comes to an argument. Sadly some teams deny illegal services when they have skin on their rubbers from serving...

The summer shutdown here in Sydney.

Mind you it's going to be mid 40s C in parts of it today!

Hanging out till the local club reopens on the 15th.

For me it’s the lack of promotion and grassroots support from the governing bodies. The struggles and closures of smaller clubs. The fact that table tennis is less popular now than it was 40 years ago. Meanwhile, the general public still views table tennis as backyard recreation rather than a serious sport.

I've had people look at me dumbfounded when I mention that it's an Olympic sport.

From a player's perspective lack of places and people to play is the worst. I wouldn't have to drive 100 miles to go to a good tennis club or golf course.

As a spectator I think the worst thing is that you can't see the spin. 90% of the skill in the sport is literally invisible to an untrained observer. I think most other sports are more visible to a spectator.

Agreed!
This is exactly one of the biggest reasons the sport isn't as popular as it could be and I think it turns off spectators and beginners alike. I liked the 2 color ball, but purists didn't; which is silly to me. I actually think that in the earlier stages it's helpful to use a striped ball for beginners to play with so they can see the weird things that happen to the ball so they can better understand spin and how the ball reacts to the bat with angles, etc.

From a players perspective, the worst thing are any of the unenforceable rules...friction, hidden serves, booster, etc. I'd rather they just did away with the rules so everyone is subject to the same advantages and disadvantages. I mean, I train for hidden serves now because it's just going to happen...
