Going to try to make it in tonight. but I'm expected to cook for the family, so we'll see how that goes.

I am very curious how the faster HPS on the backhand will be against my practice partner. It's more forgiving in some ways, and less forgiving in a lot of other ways. Speed is the biggest difference. But it plays so nicely, and is far better on offense. My guess is that there will be a net no-gain as usual.

I will put the Reflectoid on a second defplay. I will say this, double inverted chopping is best on the defplay compared to any other defensive blade I've tried. Not sure why. My other Defplay is a flared handle though, but it has Bogeyhunter's autograph on it so maybe some of that coveted BH mojo is in there soemwhere.

I think have reached a no-return threshold where I have to pursue double inverted play now. I attempted to play as a chopper about a week ago and got creamed by someone I have never lost to. I then played double inverted and won fairly handily.

I have also finally come to grips with the idea that ALL+/OFF- blades, true to all of the clichés are best for me. I currently play a Joola Rossi Emotion which I have great control with, and a newish Stiga Alllround NCT, which offers great control. I think the Rossi is a little bit better for me right now as I have spent the most time with it. But I have to give the NCT a shot. I love the feel of both these blades.

I think fast(ish) rubbers on a medium speed blade is far better than slow rubbers on a fast blade. Putting Karis or something like that on the JRE or SAN is just too anemic in terms of power. Some of that is technique for sure, but I need to wood to do a little of the work. Upon switching back, my consistency improved immediately. It was pretty astonishing how out of control I was by comparison. That's where I'm at with equipment.

I still tend to play a double inverted chopping game at times or an “allround” game for about 20% of my play. It happens when my attacking (which is weaker than my defense) tends to start losing me points. I then can get back into the rally play away from the table.

My opponents noted that my best loops come from mid to long distance. Both wings. Interesting. Still a lot of artifacts from playing as a defender continue to creep into my game even though I am attempting become more offensive minded.

Other notes, my practice partner recently said I loop too vertically and do not have enough forward trajectory. Another team mate says I don't loop vertically enough, but rather go too forward. Another (former) team mate said my loop is fine, I just need to work on consistency. I give up. Haha.

And another one is lost to the light side...

Don't you love when you get conflicting advice? It's even worse if it comes from different coaches, not just teammates...

You can still chop with inverted. Just saying.

Oh, nooo :o

I am no coach but I feel like you might be over-analyzing your results a little. I posted this on your blog before but IMHO if you were to stick to the basics and develop a killer serve, FH loop (3rd, 5th ball), and a service return -- your backhand surface won't matter as much.

For me personally, my style comes down to what I enjoy doing the most. How you feel is more important than your result. Whenever I used to play as an attacker I felt like the end result was a coin toss pretty much every time. The rallies were quick and random and there was a lot of luck involved. I used to get crushed by a lucky 1300 and then in the next match had a chance at a 1800. Nowadays, when I play as a modern chopper, if someone beats me - they have to work hard for it. I no longer have this feeling of "what the xxx just happened??" after losing. If they win, they deserve it.

Guys guys...I am currently playing with double inverted, but it doesn't mean this is permanent. I am so wishy washy with this stuff...you never know. What I mean about the threshold is, in my current state, i am now ineffective as a chopper. I could probably get back to my old level in a month or so. BUT, I have never played with double

That being said, I am really enjoying playing a mixed game right now. I had another solid night of play last night. I again defeated people I should be beating, and lost to those I probably would lose to with the LPs. Against my teammate, I played very well, and he's been beating me a lot lately (Shahir is his name, young kid around 1800). I took the first game 10-6. Split the next 2. Lost in 5. Best I've squeaked out against him in recent history is 1-3...with pips.

I think we all over-analyze our game. But this is something I have been thinking a long time about to be honest. It's not just because my backhand is superior, it's a style change. My forehand has gotten better, but I am enjoying being at the table, and then switching to defender as needed.

What's funny is, I have the exact opposite impression of my results as you. I have fewer upsets against me with double inverted, but as a LP chopper, I lose to 1300 level guys on occasion. Never happens now (not so far at least). I also never do the upsetting against higher level competition. But I'm okay with that trade-off...I like the consistency.

But honestly, the chances of me switching back someday are pretty good. Who knows.

Also, FWIW, I still chop a lot. I don't really counter loop....I counter chop. Especially on the FH. On the BH I probably fish more often on defense unless I can let it drop a little. I still dont' have that technique down quite right. I think I'm playing kind of a mixed game...not really retriever.

Kind of like guy in the below video, but with a little more topspin and blocking, maybe more 3rd ball at the table stuff. But of course, I'm not as good as him by a long shot:

WOW he is very entertaining to watch. You don't know what he will do and so much variety in the game, forcing his opponent to play many different shots too.

I wish you all the best with your double inverted experience. Fishing on the BH is quite fun but I have found it is a weakness against better players unless you can add a nice counter loop to get in the point (or turn to FH).
Have you tried an OX long pip on BH? Maybe something that reverses more

Sorry, I thought I responded to you but apparently I didn't hit submit.

Yes, I've used every LP and virtually ever thickness. I played DG OX and P-1R in all sponges. I've tried every OX LP except some of the new obscure German ones like the Der Materialspecialist pips and the Pimple Park pips. But OX pips....yeah most of them. Dtecs, badman, C&F, Saviga Pro, Palio ck-whatever, DG II, all of the cheap chinese LPs...literally.

For me DG Ox was the best for a tweener blocking/bumping/chopping game.

RE: Fishing. There is a technique to it...I'm sure you've seen them but there are very high level (pro) defenders and retrievers for whom fishing is not a weakness. They just know how to use it and follow up after it. Gionis and Filus are great examples of guys that have a very aggressive fishing and guiding stroke. If you watch the Koji tutorials, he gives a good lesson on this as well.

Really what I wanted to post about, is how I just discovered that there is an inter-hospital ping pong tournament being run by our residents and therapists. I, of course, have signed up so that I can win this thing. There is only one serious TT player here, my buddy Mohammed who is from Sierra Leone. I can almost always defeat him.

I might have to get my practice partner to play against me with premades so I can get used to them.
