I am just wondering what you guys think is good equipment for a player coming from hardbat. Would short pips be the best choice to switch to and not have to change technique a ton?

"Amateur" is a little vague.. Would this be a basement player, or someone who's been playing in high level, organized hardbat competition? Is this someone with well-developed strokes? If this is a basement player I'd suggest going whole hog and switching to double inverted and relearning the game... In fact, buy this  :

(DANG.. should have bought one last week, the price is now slightly less than $15, including shipping.)

If this is a high level hardbat player, well, then, yeah, pips out/thin sponge would be the closest to what he's used to and he'd be able to make use of those high level skills.

Sorry I have not seen much hardbat and don't know how to evaluate his skill, but he looked very good at it lol. Not professional though, because I have watched some videos of professional hard-bat players. Thanks for your comments.

I would ask why switch at all? Is there a particular type of ball that your friend has trouble with? Wanting more spin or speed?

I've a suspicion he's a basement player trying to switch to club play, and coming up against players who are a lot better than he is. And probably thinks he'd do better by switching to sponge (which isn't always true, of course). If he's really a high level hardbat player I'm sure he'd know all about this stuff anyhow and would do better to stick with the hardbat.
