I just ordered this blade and originally I thought it was 5 ply African cherry but it is now made with ayeous -avi-avi-avi-ayeous. Does this play differently than the original? Is the spin reversal still good with pips? Also what kind of wood is avi?

I would like to know what avi is as well.

I know at least 1 member here who can calculate a blade's characteristics if you tell him the veneer types and overall thickness.

I'd be far more interested in knowing how he does it (and how well it works) than the characteristics of any given blade.

For that you'll have to ask adyy. Not much of a TT player, but one heck of a guru on wood and engineering.

Also recommend you start with searching for wood types and performance, blade frequency etc posts started by JRSDallas on MyTT. Some theories we don't agree with, but a good start. BTW, serious mental EJ awaiting.

Avi is not a known wood name, at least to me.
Many companies/builders try to use nicknames derived from ... whatever ... in order to market some product.

This name comes close to prunus avium which is the scientifical name of the SweetCherry:

Other than that ... I have at home some SweetCherry veneer. When you slide your finger along it's fibers it feels like tick paper or cardboard.
In numbers, it has around the same stiffness like limba but twice the hardness.

Regarding your blade ... can't you return it back since it's made of something else than advertised?
Or, did you allready tested it? Maybe it's a good blade and you can share some pictures.

Off topic, but I like that BBC is using a fair bit of harder woods for the core. Every other brand is using balsa, kiri, ayous almost without exception. All feel flimsy and hollow.

I use the current All Around with inverted rubber.
The current model plays slightly harder than my older All Around.

With plastic ball, the newer All Around works fine for me.

How about bamboo? Or (unspecified) hardwood?





See how they keep the weight down - routing channels in the core. Despite that, a mite heavy for me. I was thinking of buying one because the handles are cool. Four years ago there were about three or four different ones. What's left is one or two, and I think those are old stock. HRT seems to have gone down the drain as a company.

I do not think it's ITTF legal to make such a machined core.
On the other hand, from what I have seen on the net, HRT was making almost only Stiga clones.

Bamboo is good, I think the American Hinoki guys have experimented with it.

But not sure if legal. Is it wood? Is it OK to use heavily laminated materials?

About the Huieson, that amount of cutting is certainly not legal and takes away from the solid feel. Bad idea.
