What is the current rule about changing one's racket during a match, I remember a player used to be able to switch, then they changed it so you couldn't. Does anyone know the current rule? Thanks!

Yes, that's a relatively new rule. Last I played, around 1998-2001 or so, someone posted on Usenet that there was someone he knew who brought two bats to use to every game. The second bat was only brought out if the match went to expedite, he'd use it if he was serving under the expedite rule. So in essence, he'd change bats every point. Back then it was OK to change bats as long as you showed the bat to your opponent.

Does it not depend on the event you are taking part in? Different events use slightly different rules and regulations.

I think pretty much everyone uses ITTF's rules, even the ones that supposedly apply specifically to international competition. The only ones that make modifications are hardbat and sandpaper tournaments, and "promotional" events like the ones organizations like Killerspin organizes (which has such things as 50-point handicap matches for invited participants).

I suppose if you want to count neighborhood basement "tournaments".. (a lot of those still play games to 21 points... )

I'm glad for this rule.
In the 'old' days (when I think off it .. not that old as we played 5 sets to 11) I played against someone with a anti or something. I needed to get used to it ......
So first set I lost, second I won .. than he changed bat to LP. So after some balls I asked .. yes I changed. First set het won, second I won .. the he took out another one ..... after the first ball he played I was so upset I didn't play a normal ball anymore ......
I think it's unsportsmanship so i'm glad they changed the rules.

Kinda makes sense for an expedite game, though.. when you serve you have to attack (or at least, win the point within a certain number of strokes) so if you're normally a passive blocker with a slow bat then you might want something faster when you're forced to attack. Against the rules these days, of course.

if you have the same rubber properties, you should be able to change bats. But this is so different. :) :headbang: What about twiddlers? They almost have the equivalent of 2 bats :D

That's why we have a two color rule.
