Have you tried Butterfly S40+ balls? How do the play, are there any similar balls that play as these new S40+? Who/Where made these?

The balls are made in Germany in the same factory as the G40+. I’ve heard a rumor that this factory specializes in balls for roll-on deodorant. May not be true but it’s a fun urban legend.

The balls play better than the G40+ but they’re extremely dusty. After about 30 min of play the dust will be gone and they become quite shiny like the G40+.

The bounce is quite ok but the same amount of spin as with the DHS D40+ will not occur.

Personally I prefer the DHS D40+ or the Stiga Perform but some clubs here in Sweden uses S40+ for league matches and tournaments won i cant avoid it.

In a league for "elders" in my country, the balls that are valid for matches are:
1) Yasaka AB 40 3***
2) Xiom Bravo SEAM ABS 3***
3) Butterfly S40+ 3***
4) Stiga Perform ABS 3***
5) Xushaofa Sports 3*** seamless

Are the Yasaka/Xiom/Stiga similar to DHS D40+ ?

The Stiga is very similar to the D40+ so an educated guess would be that they’re made in the same factory.

I may be wrong but isn’t the Xiom ball seamless (I.e manufactured by Minkow/XSF)?

I’ve never played with the Yasaka ball.

Xiom Bravo have seam! There are 3-4 ITTF approved XIOM 3* balls, see https://www.xiom.tt/product/product_list.php?cp=327

I think there's more than one Xiom ball. I recall seeing an ad just this afternoon for a new ABS ball from Xiom - that's got to have a seam. Seamless balls aren't ABS. Indeed:

https://ittf.cdnomega.com/eu/2019/07/Balls_2019_11.pdf

No fewer than FIVE 40+ balls listed for Xiom. One seamless, four with seam. One's called a "V40+" - maybe the same as the Double Fish V40+? All of them white, no orange.

Twice that S40+ have better playability. I've got a number of practice partners who really hate the G40+ and refused to hit with them at all.

As for similar balls, I can only tell that our more experienced players also prefer DHS balls saying the Stiga feels too light comparing to these.
A small addition, need to mention that DHS is softer & flexes every so slightly more. So I think it spins better and for sure has less breaks & cracks than S40.

MORE IMPROVEMENTS TO COME SOON.

DHS still continue "sly" improvements to their plastic balls so as to better comply with the needs of China Olympic Teams. Keep youself on watches.

Improvements? Or just more s***? IMO the World Tour D40+ balls bounce lower, not as crisp, and less durable than the regular D40+. I don't notice roundness or variation to be better either.

Yes, i don't want them messing with the current balls, consistency and stability is what we need. If they want to try something new, give it a new name.

A couple of friends I play with use the S40. I think they are much better in texture than G40 (more grip for spin), with a similar bounce and good consistency. To me they are somewhere in between the G40 and the Nittaku premium.

Like someone else mentioned, they do come out dusty at first, but after it is gone they still have decent texture and definitely spinnier than G40. They seem to be about as durable as Nittaku premium as well. If you already have a 3-star ball of choice, probably not worth switching but these S40 are good IMO.

Crash the ball by halves. Look at the wall closely. You will be surprised so much.

EVOLUTION OF PLASTIC MATERIALS FOR MAKING TT-BALLS.

PP Bals First Generation 2013-2015
Cellulose Acetate materials, specific gravity 1.3
Wall thickness =0.45 mm on average.

ABS materials being empoyed in general production since 2016.

Early ABS version, specific gravity 1.1
Wall thickness = 0.35 mm on average

Current ABS version, specific gravity 1.2
Wall thickness = 0.32 mm for a random specimen.

Optimized ABS material, specific gravity 1.25
Target wall thickness (Olympic version) =0.30 mm

NOTE: The best ideal outer sphere for plastic balls would be 0.25 mm thick, it is just a matter of time, I believe.
