Anyone knows why this tournament is called this way?

Only people who’re part of an army are allowed to compete.

There was quite a bit of media noice some weeks back when the Chinese orienteering team got caught cheating in the Military Games.

I see. Do you the players themselves are part of the army (including women) or do you mean the countries they play for? And what's the Chinese orienteering team?

The World Military Games is like the olympics for people who're a part of a military service / army. They compete in different sports like table tennis, athletics, orienteering etc.

Most professional athletes in communist countries like China or North Korea are technically army officers. This includes people like Kim Song I and Ma Long. The most famous example of this system is the 70-80ies Soviet ice hockey team nicknamed the "Red Machine".
