Breath holding not required. The grovelling open letter has been dispatched to all those who can read, and a copy has been put up on the noticeboard on the main highway. The local count has totally capitulated. It now remains for the local duke to accept this and formally allow the local count's teams of knights to enter his tourney season. Now the mayhem can continue.

However ... the copy on the noticeboard on the main highway is poorly copied, stuck on sideways and not given a heading as an apology. You have to look at the back of it to see what it really is. What the local duke thinks of this will be interesting.

The local duke has written to the baron stating that the new dues that knights have to pay to the baron to go in the duke's local season of tourneys is too high, and requesting that they only pay a lesser charge if they do not enter any big tourneys. The baron has responded that the increase is out of his hands as the king has upped his dues which the baron is largely only passing on. The baron has summoned envoys for the duke to appear at the baron's court to argue their case in detail.

One of the local duke's local knights who was asked to be an envoy has possession of some damning information. Another duke held a big tourney last year that allowed knights who had only paid dues to allow them to joust in their feudal home to take part. This big tourney had the patronage of the baron himself, and displayed his coat of arms and everything. To this local knight, that seems to set a precedent for the local duke's case.

Autumn is coming!

Word has come back via despatch rider that the baron is allowing knights that only play in one season of local tourneys organised by the local duke that they only have to pay last year's level of dues. Yee ha!. This does not apply to this local knight as he adjudicates big tourneys and may enter a tourney put on by the king later on in the year. Of course the baron is sending his treasury officials along with enforcers to ensure that he gets his dues.

Autumn is here!

<stepping out of storytelling mode>
They may or may not bear some resemblance to a certain conversation held here last year :)

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away someone was accused anonymously of violating "professional" standards by infringing on someone else's privacy with respect to testing equipment in a "tourney" situation when they reported here merely that some had failed - not whose, so they have become more circumspect in telling the "story".

I but spin a yarn or two about knights, tourneys, counts, dukes, barons and kings. :) :) :)

... A visiting pair of knights was partaking in a set of jousts with a local brace of knights. With many of the passes one of them was accused of breaking early more than once, so after the other one agreed that his comrade in arms was breaking early, both picked up their weapons, spare horse, squire et al in the middle of the tourney and went home. This was witnessed personally by the local count and assorted hangers on.

The local count is requesting from the duke whether the breaking early rule should be enforced and whether a rematch should happen. The local count also cites the effect on upcoming squires of such cheating, and the effect on standings in the Cnights Rankings. If the facts are indeed as the local count has averred, and as the knights involved in the transgressions and withdrawing in the middle of the tourney are fairly senior, this humble knight is of the opinion that the tourney should be awarded as per the results of the completed jousts with a walkover for the uncompleted jousts.

Sort of trying to decipher this into table tennis. Breaking early would mean.. er, serving illegally? Kinda does sound like a pair of players left the tournament in a snit...

I can neither confirm nor deny your speculation. It would be the height of irresponsibility to do so. :) :) ... and one would hope the knights were having to do their penance.

Knights that duel in tourneys are very big on their "Middle Measurements" measurement. A bard heard it from a middle measurement scribe that the entrpreneur that runs "Middle Measurements" will stop being altruistic with accepting only donations from the powers and principalities, but join the hurly-burly of the common market place and - gasp - charge for its services in hard earned coin o' the realm. One of the other barons has intimated that they will petition the king with a cunning plan to deal with this sullying of a heretofore pure act of service.

Keep on watching the noticeboards at your local crossroads and listening to your town criers.

<any resemblance to something mentioned recently in a certain blog is purely incidental>

Working that out is central to the story, at least in the measurement of its rating.

The other part I will state now has a baron on its regal nationality.

Another instalment ...

The king had invited a merchant to bank roll a tourney where other kings could send their champions, a couple of years ago. Through some fancy wording in disappearing ink on the appointing parchment, the merchant got to make off with all of the gold paid to enter the tourney, but had to pay none of the stipends or guild invoices involved in staging the tourney. The king has now had satisfaction and his pound of flesh from said merchant. This was apparently resolved in favour of the king a season ago. I only found out on questioning one of his councillors with whom I was cloistered over another weighty matter.

It was only when I enquired by private letter that I received a reply in the king's own hand with the royal seal attached that I was informed of the following.

The king has yet to tell the likes o' us publicly when and how much he got back from the merchant, and his master of the royal purse hasn't admitted to the exact amount that has enriched his treasury, and his proclamations are missing when it was promulgated by the scribes.

Next installment ...

The plague had arrived. The people were going around with kerchiefs dipped in lavender tied around their mouth and nose. The emperor still wanted his "Festival of the Five Rings" to go ahead, which included the special tourney where only two champions from any one kingdom were allowed to enter. Some kings argued for not sending their champions to the tourney even though it was still on. They were accused of collusion by the heralds and minstrels. Finally the emperor faced reality and put off the "Festival of the Five Rings" for a year. All tourneys of all kingdoms, baronies, dukedoms and their vassals were suspended until further notice, and sheriffs and bailiffs and the like charged with keeping the local order and keeping people sequestrated. Some noted famous and infamous play actors and minstrels were self sequestrated at the Coast of Gold in Terra Australis, but after stopping their coughing and spluttering for the requisite period of time were bundled into a leaky boat and sent back to the other colonies.
