Hey all.
After more than a year of no running due to injury, I’m considering picking up a bat again for local league TT.
5 years on, what have I missed?
Is my old set up still relevant?
Any new rubbers I should be considering?
Hope you are all staying well and safe
Dingwol

TT Leagues running in UK still m8?

I don't see any problem with your setup. I've used same setup for about 8 years. No real change needed for plastic ball except maybe a little stroke adjustment that sort of naturally occurs.

Hey Reb.
Thanks - just need to find the bat now.
TT suspended here along with most things in lockdown. Strange times indeed.
Hope you’re well old friend.
Rich

Great to have you back dingwol2! Yes yes yes, come back to TT!

You've picked a tough time though, unless you've got a table at home!

Welcome back!
The world has changed quite a bit in 5 years. Not only there are still fake rubbers, but there are more "fake news" now! :D

Hey haggis, the way I see it, it’s good timing and gives me plenty of time to think it over. I’m already in touch with my old doubles partner who I think will sign me up when things get going again.

Shaolin, fake news abides.

I guess I’m amazed dtecs still seems like a great option. It was there before the FL ban and is still relevant. Seems there is little left for development in the blocking game. Anti doesn’t seem to have plugged the gap.

I’m going to stay hooked in with you guys. It’s good the interest has started to come back for me.

I'll put it in my own two cents. By all means, start with the equipment you have and are used to. No reason to change if it keeps working for you. But, just so you know, there are certainly a reason many of us felt it necessary to fiddle around with our equipment again after the new ball came in. For example, I was using the Dr. Neubauer Desperado 2, and I was very happy with it, but shortly after play with the new ball began, I started noticing both that the ball was sometimes skidding off the pips and that spin reversal was significantly lower than it had been. It took me awhile to find a good substitute, but now I'm settled on the Saviga 77 Monster on the 2019 version of the Tachi Plus blade. By the way, Achim Rendler suggested a slight modification of his old versions of blades to accommodate the new ball. It's in a thread somewhere here. Let me know if you can't find it and are interested in seeing it.

Thanks TT.
I’m so much richer since I stopped playing, I need to try and resist a new Tachi blade!

I see some old school blades that players moved away from in the 40 cell era and the early gen plastic eras... I see some of these blades doing just fine with the ABS ball.

One example is a pair of Nittaku Mono blades I got from an ex-natl player... upper 90s in weight and at least 25 yrs old blades.

I slapped on some modern offensive rubbers (Tibhar MX-K, Stiga DNA Pro) on FH and could have immediate feel and execution on offensive shots. I also goofed off and chopped well too.

Blades are important, but if you have one you have used for years, I wouldn't say start a campaign to ditch it. I would instead focus on an effort to try to "optimize" your FH rubber sponge hardness/softness and dynamic/linear properties for how you play. There is better value adjusting the rubber if you know a blade well... when you discover a rubber/sponge that makes it easier to do the more frequent things you do, you know the blade, so when you adjust a rubber you can feel what is good or bad.

While your old equipment may be fine, obviously if your inverted rubber is 5 years old you need to replace it. (Also playing again is a great EJ excuse!). Old LP may be "just fine, heh, heh, heh...

If you think about it.. Tenergy 05's been out, what, 10 years now, and it's STILL far and away the most popular choice for National level players. So... things really haven't changed that much.
