Hi all,

What is the best way to remove old layers of water-based glue (TSP Bio Fix/Free Chack etc.) from a rubber? Is this possible in the first place? It was easy back in the day - one would only have to use some kind of organic solvent. But how to remove these new latex glues?

On many of the new tensor sponges virtually impossible as the glue soaks in and they are quite fragile. Can still be done on harder traditional sponges if glue layer is thick enough to peel.

Lighter fluid and (light) rubbing.

Keep adding enough layers until it is some 20 or 30 layers thick and at which point you should be able to peel it off in chunks or use goo gone to turn it into a nasty mess and slowly but steadily gently rub it off section by section. Either way it wont be pretty

I see, I think the best solution is to buy a new one

Ordinary sunflower oil and a paper towel, that worked for me

If you put a few layers of baby oil on it will turn the glue to a mush which you can then carefully remove by rubbing, and rubbing, and rubbing etc.

Its hard work and has some risk that you will rip some small pieces of sponge out but it does work.

The baby oil will also boost the sponge a bit, which is why I experimented with it in the first place.

Why does anyone bother removing glue at all?? Even when boosting I'd just add the booster over the glue. No need to add more glue. I've never gotten to the point where I had a huge amount of glue on the sponge.

Acetone (a.k.a propanone) is works well ..

What is do is soak a piece of cloth with Acetone, and apply it all over the blade rubber, and then rub-off the glue with my finger ... On blade, I do the same. However, for more stubborn glue, it'd apply acetone, and then due a very very fine grit sand-paper to rub-off the glue.

Incidentally, to remove old glue (and sponge) from a blade (especially for premade rackets where you want to put other rubber on) use a rubber eraser. Not the ones on the back of a pencil (too small), get a big eraser. I think the ones meant to erase ink would be better, they have some sort of grit in them.
