So I watched most of the vids (I think 4 left). Your hook shots are incredible!

I wanted to ask about how you train your FH for mid distance, do you do anything specific? Or just the regular loop to loop kinda thing

Reason I ask is coz I find it quite difficult to do a drill that we can keep consistent and actually get to the shot I want to practice lol. I don't have regular training partners and the people I play with their skill lvls vary greatly. I have 1 or 2 people I can do drills with but I only get to do it maybe twice a month. So wondering if there are any really good efficient drills I could do.

Thanks again. Yeah the hook works well when I don't overdo it or the opponent knows how to handle it :)

Don't think I do anything special to train FH topsin mid distance. Some loop to loop practice and sometimes a drill where I loop, the partner then blocks to backhand, I chop back to forehand, partner loops to forehand and I counterloop or fish back, then repeat. On the forehand side I think its good to train your judgment in choosing the right technique depending on the incoming ball (counterloop (normal if the ball is high, or hook when lower), fish (Filus style), chop with inverted or chop with pimples).

But as you said the problem with many drills is that you need a consistent partner. You might need to simplify to get more balls on the table or do multiball. Depending on the partner the time is sometimes better spent on something that the partner does well.

Now this is just my observations but I could be wrong because its short highlights.

But I just noticed that when the opponent pushes long and you're in position to either FH loop directly or step around slightly and FH loop, you often choose to push back even with the FH push back. Why is this? Nothing wrong with it of course, just trying to understand your thought process etc

The tournament season has finally started! We organized a team double round-robin tournament with cash prices and good competition. My team ended up third which was about as expected. As mentioned in previous posts I play better when tired because of being able to relax. Now just need to recreate that when not tired. Looked over old notes on things to work on and most of them still apply, but since then I've added a few more things:

Forehand:
I'm tense and strain too much on my forehand. Topspin footwork exercises feel about as tiring as a sprint running interval and I'm getting out of breath quickly. Compare that with chopping exercises and it's a lot easier. My conclusion is that I need to relax more and not use as much effort on each shot. Rather work on technique to get a good pace on the shots. I got some coaching feedback to shorten the arm and work on getting the right leg/hip forward, rather than the left leg.

Backhand chop:
Start the stroke higher when receiving slow loops. Just starting higher improves bat speed and control and makes it easier to receive unexpected high bounces. A related tip for choppers is to keep the bat high at all times, something the videos show that I'm not doing. Keeping the bat high of course makes it easier to start the chop higher.

Serve:
Starting to get comfortable with higher toss backhand serve and getting results in more spin and better fast serves. Also working on forehand serves to create more opportunities for third ball attack.

Good observation and I'm working on using more forehand loop. Sometimes I just get into a too defensive mode and miss chances to attack. I think it's a mindset thing where I need to look at defensive strokes as a setup for initiating attacks and seeing patterns in the play. An example is opponents that doesn't have a strong backhand. If you push or chop hard to backhand there is a high chance that the opponent just pushes back to BH so you can step around early.

Same thing often happens to me. If I'm in my usual mindset, I'll actively look to play forehand and backhand loops. My brain knows that against most opponents that's my best way to score points, so it comes naturally. If I consciously seek to defend however, I then find it really hard to get my feet in the right place to play a loop. I think it's because usually the ball comes middle or backhand, so I have to go from feet this way...

(e.g. left foot back for chopping, left foot forward for looping). It's more common for me these days to play a backhand loop because then I don't really have to move my feet.

Great to see you playing Magnus. You're certainly a better player than me, and coming up against players that I really wish I could play against! I think my game would improve huge amounts if I was exposed to players who consistently loop on both sides.

For me if I have a good chance to win playing defensively I often overdo it getting a bit too passive. Other times I go into the match with a more offensive mindset. It could be because the opponent is more consistent than my defense, or the FH felt good at warmup or my teammates reminded me to use it. Would like a more consistent BH loop as I find it can be very effective.

Thanks! Yeah I'm sure you would improve with higher pace and consistent two wing loopers. The serve and return game is also very different. I'm lucky living in an area with good players and not many defensive players here so good players sometimes ask me to play.

Yeah, for sure, serves are a big deal too. The best player in our league has the best serves, that's probably no coincidence. My service game is significantly better than the rest of my game, but I've found at national tournaments in the past that my serves are no real problem for good players.

That sounds familiar, its hard when you can't get any cheap serve points. The better opponents typically also are more aware of what serves work well vs defenders and will often do fast serves to backhand and middle combined with very short to forehand.

Update from last two weeks tournaments.

Went to a regional tournament beginning of October. Played pretty well. Forehand was good, while defense was a bit up and down. Ended up winning my events and went home with a boat load of imported swedish candy and a cash price. Can I can call myself a professional player now? :)

Last weekend was the National Veterans championship. It was two years since last time and since then I have been "upgraded" to the 40+ category. The good form from the week before continued and I got some good wins. Particurlarly forehand was working well. Defense was pretty good too but still struggling against heavy topspin to backhand and receiving some long serves.

Uploaded highlight videos from both tournaments. Maybe I'll do a point by point analysis from one of the games when time permits.

In other news the forehand serve that I have been working on sometimes result in the bat hitting my side. A few bad hits has now caused a pain in the ribs as if they are bruised. It's not too bad but I had to stop with the serve which is unfortunate as it got me some good third ball opportunities. Anyone else have the same problem? I've heard of people using a plate or cushion for protection :)

Big congrats brother!

Man I really enjoy your vids though, your game looks so good. You played so well too your FH was on fire.

As good as you are it's nice to know you also have problems with long fast serves, especially when mixed with some short ones too. I would love to see it in 1 edit though if ever you could. All the ones you fail and get back just to see how you do/don't deal with them

Oh wow I'm so glad I stumbled on this blog. Your game looks so so nice to watch.

I honestly wish I could play like you. Did you always use 1mm sponge and P1r? Or did you start off with thinner sponge.
Watching people like you always always ALWAYS (cannot help it) temps me to try again more suitable chopping LPs and sponge but when I watch myself play I just don't have the technique or skill to pull it off.
Do you know of any people in your league who play similar to you except with low friction LPs OX/0.5?

I've subscribed to your channel if I get the chance tonight I'm going to binge watch all vids. Thanks for all the uploads!

Thanks for the sub and nice comments! I used to play with 0.5mm P1-r. Wrote something about why I switched from 1.0 to 0.5 in this thread: https://ooakforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=26549. But then around 4 years ago I switched back. It was mainly because i kept popping up my pushes vs push with the 0.5mm,

There are few choppers here in Norway, only one other in the league, using long pimples but not thin sponged or ox. Examples of thin/ox pimple choppers that comes to mind are swedish choppers Gustaf Ericsson and Thomas Bennborn. You probably seen their videos already.

Ängby has got an entire array of choppers coming through their ranks (Keränen, Sjövold etc). They played young Alve Sjövold alongside Mr Ericsson in one of their team matches this past weekend in Superettan (2nd league tier).

Nice to see that there are some young swedish defenders! I just had a quick look at some of Alves matches on youtube. He has nice variation in his game. Will take a look at the league links also, thanks! Would love to play in an all defender team :) Is alternative playing styles and equipment getting more popular now? Maybe inspired by Bergström and Falck.

Thanks! I've uploaded two full sets here that I'm thinking of analyzing. Would be great if anyone has some feedback.

I cannot watch it without signing in. Is that how it is or am I doing something wrong?

Good to watch :)

In the first end, he struggled with your defensive game. When you started playing more forehands, he almost welcomed that - he was quite comfortable blocking and punching them.

Second end you started badly (gave away 3 points off serve receive and trying to playing a sidespin forehand practically off the ground... :) ) but then got a few good FH rallies in to catch up. However, if you watch it back, you'll see you won a few points with your defensive game and lost quite a few points trying to attack. In the end, you lost that set because I think you gave away 6? points off your forehand loop.

He seemed to give your defensive game absolutely no problems, and he lost quite a few points from it. Why did you attack so much? I think you've done a "me" :) If you'd pushed him around a bit more and encouraged him to attack more, I think you could've beaten him quite easily.
