Kees has written another 2 excellent articles for us, which I've published in the PIPS website. They are excellent articles, and the modern defense article is hte most comprehensive I've ever seen! Well worth a read guys!

Excercises for short pip play

Modern Defense - techniques and tactics

Thanks again for your great contribution Kees!

Well, among men defending is quite a bit harder than it is among women. Do not despair, though. Think about how to forestall the attacks which bring down your wall of defence. Maybe you could stay a bit closer to the table, blocking more often. Or maybe you could work in a suprise attack more frequently. Against a proficient topspinner with fast equipment it is hard to keep up a classic defence. You may have watched Joo Se Hyuk being slaughtered by Wang Li Qin in the WTC finals last Sunday: Wang attacked the middle, where Joo had no answer - couldn't chop, couldn't attack either. Do not get pinned down that way; choose a wing and get your chops and surprise attacks going.

Good luck!

Kees I read your article once and found it to be very informative. I read it the second time and found bits I had missed on first read. I think its a good reference to come back to again and again. Even if I don't move as well as you suggest to around the table, its good to remind myself by reading it and maybe bit by bit I will achieve it. Thanks.

Just read through it finally! (been busy with midterms lately) Great article as always Kees. I really this wish this kind of stuff had been around when I first started learning to play! I liked your clarifications on the differences between classic and modern defense, as well as your castle metaphor. Good stuff :)
