Hey pips friends

FAN Ying (CHN) is pure Defender and is ranked as world women No. 33. She played in the semi finals at the Korea Open 2008. Does anybody knows the pips rubber on her backhand? Are they short or long pips?

Cheers, Martin

PS I'm just uploading the video from the Korea Open 08 where she lost against GUO Yan.

Already D/led it from MYTT.
However, poster said she used 2 inverted.
To me...it's crazy being a chopper using 2 inverted!!!

I have read in multiple reports that she uses short pips. Nothing really authoritative and nothing more specific and I have googled hard looking.

I wouldnt call her 'pure defender'. She really rips a counter-loop when opportunity arises.

fwiw I noticed in recent compared to old video that she has changed her pips from black to red.

FAN Ying is not very succesful when she tries to counter loop. Sometimes she attacks with the fh to disturb the flow of her opponents. Her main strokes are fh and bh defence.

The pips of the red ones are softer and don't fall out. With softer pips it's simpler to attack. Maybe we've less spinreverse with the red topsheet. But we've definitively more control with them.

Hi, buddy.I am a new member. :D Nice to meet u all. Fan Ying use SP on her BH. Fan Ying made mistakes when she counter loop in the semi finals. Wrong Timing. After Fan Ying change LP to SP, she face obstacle till now. To be Top SP chopper, the sportaman has to distinguish the degree of ball spin exactly. But Fan can't do well. This is another Fan Ying's video. Enjoy it.

Welcome to australia!

The knowledge that she changed from long pips to short pips now makes a lot of sense. When watching her backhand chop it looks like a long pips stroke to me. She used the backhand pips to counter in the warmup, but during the match i don't think she drove or hit a single backhand. In the second half of the 4th game as well as the last point of the 6th game, she could easily have smacked a nasty backhand attack, but instead she did more of a weak long pips shovel, as if she forgot she was using short pips.

I don't think she'll have a problem with it though, at least for defense. She seems to read the spin just fine with her forehand inverted chops, and backhand short pips should be a lot easier once she gets more used to it.

Another interesting thing i noticed in this match was how the crowd seemed to affect both players. Notice that the audience is sitting on only one side of the court, and the players both seemed to play smarter and more patiently when they couldn't see the crowd, and even had different body language. Both players won most of their points, especially toward the end, when their back was to the crowd. She may have more problems with her mental strength than her short pips. Then again maybe one side had better lighting.

Thanks for the video-link. Do you know why CTTBI didn't produce new videos?

An article about Fan Ying's advance which is posted before a few months ago in China. It is written by Fan Ying's team coach. Besides her poor reading spin, Fan has poor mental state as Kagin mention. In the Article,it state that reading different top spin rotation, for example, is one of the core for Chopper training. Is it 100 rotation of top spin or 150 or 200 etc? It is Chinese national team demand for the sportman. The best reading spin rotation is Ma Lin in the national team. This is the reason of Ma's good at control the ball. Some Chinese pro sportman still can't distinguish the spin rotation well. Btw, I dunno why CTTBI did'nt produce new videos.
