Hi guys,

Strangely enough I've hardly played table tennis for the past 3 years through one thing and another but now I'm getting back into it again. I was wondering what the current 'go to' sponged long pimple rubber is for choppers/modern defenders? What are all you guys using?

I've just thrown a bat together so I can get back to playing again and it's feint long 3 on a joo se hyuk blade but I don't get much spin off the FL3 and its not difficult for the opponent to play against.

I wonder what the new Butterfly Ilius S will play like...

Looking forward to hearing everyone's comments

Thanks
Adam

This is all IMO, but I do not think there is a "go to" LP as much as in the past for chopping. FL3 on a JSH blade is more than adequate to play a chopping game. I think the most important thing is picking equipment that works well with the game you want to play (chopping vs push blocking vs others) and stay with that equipment and focus on training.
again, IMO. I have wasted way too much time chasing the "right equipment" rather than using the same equipment and chasing better technique.

Not sure how the new Butterfly rubber plays... but myself I have been using Curl P4 on a 1.0mm sponge. Not the easiest rubber to learn with due to its grippy nature but once you master it, it's deadly. It is slightly different from traditional slippery long pips where people can abuse your backhand by serving long fast topspin and killing the third ball. This one, if you have a good chopping technique, you can generate your own spin so they will net those third ball kills almost every time. Another characteristic I like (or maybe just got used to) is its soft dampening sponge. If you watch top pros chop, they are far out chopping while with this one I can stand a bit closer and chop at mid-distance.

TSP/Victas Curl P1. A classic (for a reason!)

Is there a difference between the two?

I'm not a chopper per se.. I play a mixed style - against some players, I'll play close to the table... against others, I'll move back (mid-distance), and chop.. So, for playing a chopping style.. I like

  • Yinhe Neptune 0.7mm, and even 1.00 mm
  • Dawei 388-D1 0.5.mm
  • Dawei 388-D 0.5mm
  • Bomb Talent 0.6mm

Neptune offers the best control, and Bomb Talent seems to give opponents the most trouble..

Xiom Vega LPO on Butterfly Hadrawshield. LPO on Joo Se Hyuk and VKMO blade, it feels a bit too fast.
TSP Curl P1R 1.1-1.3 on Joo Se Hyuk and VKMO. Getting ready to change it with a Donic Spike P1 or new Victas Curl.
Using them mainly for chopping.

I was using Gambler GXL (medium/low grip, stiff pips) & on the white sponge. I switched to Stiga Vertical 20 in 0.5mm (AFAIK it's a Curl P4 clone) because I was having trouble with consistently pushing against backspin balls. GXL was fine off the table, but it's better for pushblocking/attacking backspin than pushing it, which is what I usually do with my backhand.
