A fellow umpire of mine has related an interesting case that took place in a lower league tournament. A player approached to him asking for friction test on his spare set of rubbers long pips. All three rubbers submitted were in mint condition, and everything did failed in the test. It is to say that some rubber suppliers still goes on producing the low-friction products in utter defiance to ITTF minimum friction limit of 0.5.

That is that, money doesn't smell, profits come first. Thanks to our Italian fellow, we have now found out that some crooky and yet clever China suppliers are looking to make money by catering the need of the old farts. Seeing that a good many players got eager for non-grippy pips, some of China suppliers took an adventure catering illegal products of low friction rubbers on general market, unadvertised though. Nice commerce, indeed.
Yes, you need a special device to detect the "hidden" low- friction pips.
