Can someone tell me how to insert a HTML code into here so I can put the chat box in?

Is there a way to put in a embed code?

Only admin can do this using the BB codes or modification of the software.

It's a good suggestion though, but I remember discussing whether a chat option was a useful thing to have, and most agreed that it would mean a lot of people might chat instead of post, which means any useful information discussed via chat is gone as soon as it scrolls off the screen, and people might well ask the same question over and over again.

That's the beauty of a forum.. people can join the discussion at their leisure, and everyone can benefit from the information posted... and it's there to stay... Only down is that you might have to wait a little longer for an answer, but a lot more people are likely to see the question

Well, sometimes you'd just want to chat about stuff with someone rather than PM back and forth with them.
Anyway, I'm sure there are arguments for and against.

Let me know if you want the code, because I've got it here ready to go.

You're right, there are arguments both ways, so I'm not trying to knock the idea, and I'm happy to hear what other think as well...

A chat would be fun so we can talk at each other while watching the english open stream that'll be on in a little over two hours.

I think it would be good for chatting the kind of stuff you would never start a topic about, plus you can start little private things in there, so you can have a live one-on-one.

I still think it's a good idea, as I just saw HaggisV online then, and thought that I might like to chat with him.
So long as people have an idea of what should be posted in topics compared to chatting about, there's no harm on it I reckon.

No harm in a trial?

Yes you have a point... perhaps a trial it worth a go... As I'm in the process of organsing the forum upgrade already, I'll add it to the list...

Please put other suggestions in the 'forum suggestions' thread, or they'll probably get forgotten... my poor memory is legendary

While I would love a chat option as well, it would definitely be more personal and we could chat like mates. But I tend to agree with two things haggis and speedy said. That a lot of stuff would be lost and not available to those that were not in that particular chat. I see the advantages of chat which are more in the line of it being fun etc. But I would not want to lose info that I can log in and read at my leisure. Weighing the pros and cons, I would probably say no. Besides, if it was good, most forums would have chat features, and the way I see it, most don't. There must be a logical explanation.

I am generally against 'chat rooms' in forums for various reasons:

- I've never seen them work successfully along side a forum. They always eventually get abandoned because...
- They often don't keep a good record of what is said.
- They are poor for search engine friendliness
- They are a lot more work to monitor.
- Easily abused by outside forces.

Where I have seen them work:
- If they are shut down except on scheduled chat times. So users know, "oh its 8pm, must be chat time". And so it can be more easily monitored.
- If the scheduled chat has a defined/structured topic. This makes it easier to follow later if its recorded.
- When the chat is not associated w/ a forum (not this case obviously).

We've well and truly versed ourselves with the downside of chat here. However I think we should consider what the upside might be.

Here are some points I can think of:

- Would take a lot of the miscellaneous/banter/pleasantry posts out of the forum. ie, you read a post and message a person LOL or Thanks etc (where you probably wont do this with a PM).

- Could have a protocol that anything said in chat where a person appreciates an answer they suggest it be posted into the forum.

- better informal interaction between members

- no need to use/login to a separate communication method (eg MSN, Yahoo etc) which can be cumbersome and foreign to some members

- an extra option on the forum that may attract members or give existing members a greater reason to use this forum over others

- something new to try which if nothing else gives the impression the forum is not "closed off" to trying ideas, even if it does flop.

- may give a quick and easy way to nip issues in the bud with quick polite clarification of points between members and/or mods.

I'm neither for or against a forum chat. I think I would probably use it if it was there, have never really yearned for it though. I do think that it shouldn't be ignored to at least try if the facility is there in the next upgrade though.

I think a chat room would be pretty cool. There are times when I sign on and see friends on here that I would like to talk to. Sometimes I send them a PM and they don't see it. So I guess I'm just stuck and can't talk to them. If you don't like a chat room, don't use it. But just because some people here does not like them doesn't mean we can't have the option to use one.

You could say the same about the use of PMs. The use of a chat room will not take away from the discussions on this forum. If I see someone online and want to talk to them, I think it would be neat as hell to carry on a conversation with someone from another part the world. Waiting for someone to answer a PM can be a pain. Especially if you see them online and they miss the PM you sent them. I can't see me using it all that often. But the option to have it would be nice.
