On another forum, this Hungarian Open qualifying match between Bulgarian short pip penholder Vladislav Tanchev and Canadian Andre Ho was pointed out as being interesting. I watched it and agree. If you like unorthodox styles, you'll love Tanchev.

There's also a lot of footage of this guy on YouTube. He's currently rated ITTF #380.

Quite an entertaining video. The Penholder sure had a wicked serve that worked throughout the match. Quite a few errors by the Canadian shakehander.

Yeah, he has a nasty game in general. Always some kind of weird spin on the ball. Very interesting.

A couple of things going on there. Interesting! Very little follow through on a few of the seemingly very spinny short returns. Any secrets behind this technique?
Looked like his backhand side was very weak (which is not uncommon for a penholder, I guess, though at this level I'd expect more). He sure moved well to compensate for that, but he often left his forehand side looking wide open. Not easy to exploit when you don't know what spin your're dealing with, though.

What was that with the serve at 10-10 in the first set (@7:17)? Could be the serve was hidden, but I think that is inconsistent with the gestures from the shakehander.
The one @28:43 is more obvious, but that looks more like an accident.
Also, what happened leading to 5-3 in the last set? Looks like the two players agree that it's Tanchev's point, but they have a hard time convincing the refs.

All in all it seemed to be quite a verbal encounter. Small side note: what was it with the shakehands after the match? Tanchev uses some kind of inverted lefthand shake. (Even confuses the assistant ref into using the other hand.) Is the right hand perhaps so damp that he doesn't want to expose people to his proper handshake, or is he using some adhesive (handball grip spray)?

Creepy serves and very unique playing style all in all.
Would be cool if I could see more of this guy.

Thanks Sir MMNB :)

I have to say, a guy smacking winners in warm ups, would probably get a hard smash right between the eyes from me. Just warm up dude!

Thing is, you cant even appeal this one to a referee. I would just say "I'm ready-lets play" :headbang:

Indeed so. However, I interpreted it differently. To me it looked like the two referees agreed that it was Ho's point (showing 4-4 on the score board), but Ho in turn insisted that his return was out (only hitting the table after rebounding from Tanchev's racket), and the score should be 5-3 to Tanchev.

I base my interpretation mainly on what was done on the score board. Hard to say for sure what went on when you can only hear fragments of what they're saying.

The action start at 47:20. The shakehander complains to the official before the score keeper changes the score. In other words, he disagrees that he missed the table. At 47:40 the shakehander touches the edge of the table to show that the ball hit the table. At 48:55 the score keeper gets off his chair and walks to the shakehander to show him that the ball landed off the table, by a few inches.

What do you know??? At that precise crucial moment in the match (47:22) , the shakehander's eyesight might have diminished, his depth perception reduced, and his concentration diverted. Yeah right! Nice try and bad acting on his part. So glad he lost the decision and the match!
