And the fact that I try to be the nice guy at the other end just winds these guys up more.

I've played with guys like that as well... they get upset, you stay nice, which seems to really annoy them! :( Not sure if there's much you can do when this happens, so you might as well enjoy it. :(

I've always adhered to the view that temper / anger have no place in sport. However, in my third match tonight, I confess I seriously lost it, I won the first 11-9, and lost the second 11-9. Against a player against whom I have a 67% record, In the third I lost 11-1 - f$ck knows how. In the fourth I really really lost it after a couple of lucky net calls and a really dreadful service return, and I flung my bat into one of the dividing things in anger. In the end I lost 3-1, 11-9 in the final.

So: in general I am amazingly calm and patient and unruffled. However, it seems against people I *know* I can beat, I get stressy and angry. I'm ashamed of my behaviour... but all the same I'm curious to know the forum's experience and view on this.....

You are human. And this is a good thing, because now, when you see someone else lose it, you will not judge too harshly. Temper and anger are a part of sport and always have been. For every Borg there is a McEnroe. It is better to be like Borg, everybody knows that. Everybody wants to be like that. But judge not, lest ye be judged as someone once said.

@dunc, I am the opposite. Never lose my zen anywhere except when playing TT. I don't throw my racket, though. But I swear in the most vile manner, generally in obscure languages so as to not be too upsetting.

I can't quite imagine that Baal... you're always so calm and collected online. :o

I want to bump up this thread again after seeing that "violence in TT" post...
Yes, for every Borg, there is a McEnroe.
The following video is quite long. Notice that even Borg admitted that he was a "bad boy" in his junior years playing tennis and then he learned to keep the fire inside himself.

It can't go too far though, I've thrown a lot of rackets during my years playing table tennis but that is something I really try to avoid since it's a bit over the edge IMO.

Reminds me of a story. There was (might still be) this old guy who lived in South Bend, Indiana by the name of Harry Deschamps. Rated over 2000, for many years the second top player in the state (Richard Hicks was better) and this was when he was well into his 60s and 70s. The interesting thing was that he played full-time hardbat, and was a chopper. He'd regularly beat up-and-coming young loopers.

Well, according to a friend of mine (this was back in the 80s) who, when he wasn't in college, played at the same club, one day there was this teenager, maybe rated 1600 or so, and he was losing to Harry. Badly. According to my friend, during that match, this kid threw something like six rackets against the wall, breaking them. Harry would walk up to the broken racket, pick it up and calmly peel the rubber off.
