I have this weird problem that's making me unable to receive serves recently. I basically know how to read what spin is imparted on the ball and considering the fact that the people I play against don't disguise it that well, I should be able to receive it right? Problem is, regardless of me knowing what to do to receive a certain spin, I always do something else. Example, I see him serve sidespin with his racket going to the left (my perspective) - I know I should angle my racket to the right, but at the last millisecond, I drop the angle and it goes flying out in random directions. Frustrating thing is, he does the exact same serve again, and I do the exact same response. Should I be keeping my hand tight to avoid relaxing it in the middle of receiving? Or should I just keep practicing?

I got t three words for you ... Repetition, repetition, repetition

Repetition is how you become good at any sport, artistic endeavor, math, writing … just about any activity one can think of. We’ve all heard, many times over, the truism that “practice makes perfect.”

I'm lucky that our club, there are quite a few higher level players practicing serves by themselves ( while waiting for their playing partners) Instead of them going from one end of the table after each serve, I volunteer to return serve for them and they can even 3rd ball attack.
Good way to practice and learn really difficult serves. Watch out for those opportunities and take advantage as much as you can if you get the chance.

Now if you do the same mistake during practice ... I dunno what to suggest.

when I teach boys I ask where is another place that you can return the ball, I try and make it their idea
so try something different, watch others, etc
