I had an interesting lesson today.
My coach wanted to do forehand to backhand topspin and back again.
I realized that I over rotate on my forehand follow through so it is hard to go to the backhand fast.
I also tend to stop at the end of my backhand.
My coach wanted me to do a figure of eight movement with no stopping.
When I got it it was a much more flowing movement and faster recovery too.
So much to learn in table tennis!!

I need a new battery for my video camera.
My coach is high level so I feel he knows what he is talking about.
The bat movement recommended is a figure of eight but with body rotation for the start of the forehand.
It flows from the end of the backhand topspin shot with no pause.
Body rotation sets up the bat for the forehand shot so from the top of the backhand shot to the start
of the forehand it is a quarter of the figure of eight going down and back.
From the end of the forehand it flows down to the start of the backhand. No pauses.
Maybe someone more expert than me can comment.
I am dong shadow play.
He suggested to focus on the left hand when doing rotation for the forehand as this can enable more relaxation of the racket arm and hand at the beginning of the stroke. Trying to relax the arm is counterproductive. Also I tend to drop my left hand (i am right handed) when doing the backhand rather than have it more balanced. So what you do with your left hand is important. My wrist is laid back on the forehand due to tennis habits. This is why I tend to hit more to the middle of the table and it is harder to brush. I also raise my elbow a little for the backhand rather than fully rotate around a still elbow. This also means that I hit more in the middle of the table. Towels on the table to force me to hit the correct angle with a ball machine would be helpful. Accurate ball position is more important than speed. Another tip he told me is that when I straighten my legs when under too much under pressure from footwork the ball goes into the net. Stay low, eyes level.
