I was going to put this in the injury area but felt I would get a better answer here. I'm having pain in the base of my thumb especially with my rpb. already seen my hand surgeon recommed a sterod shot. I'm holding that out as my last resort but it did get better when I took steroids for my asthma. anybody else have this problem?

Do you have pictures of your grip, front and back of bat? Also, is your set up heavy?

Could your thumb pain come from smartphone use?

I never had thumb pain until recently, after I got myself a bigger smartphone and extending my thumb more when using it.

agree with shaolinTT..also list your setup..sometime when doing rpb especially the flick(chiquita), the blade vibrate a lot and effect your thumb.

I had the exact same pain in the base of my thumb. After sometime, I sort of concluded it was caused by my RPB hit action when I press my thumb into the bat, arching the thumb backwards.

I switched to shakehand after that.

I had the same pain lately but not from RPB. That was caused by trying out some tricky serve. :whew: For RPB flicks and loops I learn the Wang Hao way of pressing only with index finger and a relax thumb so no problem there for me. Thumb only press when doing FH as told by WH. Since TPB also press with index finger with relax thumb so switching between RPB and TPB becomes natural.

my thumb pain go better. ice. motrin. I have to admit that I stopped doing serves that stress out my joints. I'm late 50's and realized that professional table tennis players are a lot younger than I. (Wang Hao just retired and he was all of 30!) I have to play again another day so I lay off difficult activities drills serve types and swings. I read about relaxing my hand in my grip. using my body to swing instead of my hand and arm. My blades are on the heavy side (I love max thick rubbers) and have found it important to counter balance my blades with lead tape on the top of the handle.
