It looked to me like Wang Xi couldn't read the SP spin variations very well. Early on he appeared to give him a few no-spin serves to the pimples too. Maybe he didn't realise he was playing against SPs?

I doubt a pro player wouldn't know with what equipment the opponent is playing. It' strange, though, that Wang Xi lost: he was most of the time the attacking player and in most cases the most attacking pip player wins the match.

I agree. First I thought he had a bad day. He made some very uncommon misstakes and hesitated on some points he should not. But he hade beaten Steffen Mengel with 13-11 in fifth just an hour before. He would not do that if he had a bad day (or perhaps both Mengel and Wang Xi had bad days :) ). I thinkt he just could not read the spin and lost all conficdence after he lost the second set. He played slow and controlled in third but then Wang Yang attacked a few points in fourth and Xi again started to hesitate.

BTW, than TTLondon2012 must be working 24-7 with those vids... How does he/she manage to put them out so fast?

Wow, tough crowd for Wang Yang there. I think they only cheered one single point that he won - and that was the outcome of a fairly epic rally which he probably shouldn't have been able to win.

Great video though - loads of points won with misread spin again. He's a significantly more consistent chopper (especially forehand, actually) than Yuto, but doesn't appear to attack anywhere near as much.

I would say Yuto is more consistent, but Wang seems to vary spin a lot more. He has a blistering attack, far stronger than Yutos. It seems to be enough that his opponents knows this... and he can stay away from the table and chop only attacking a few times every set. I think it is the dynamics in his game, the difference in speed, between his defense and attacks that is the key. Wang Xi had lots of problems trying to fish back Wang Yangs FH counters, they seem to carry lots of spin.

Really? Every time I've watched Yuto, his chopping seems to be the major element of his game that "lets him down" (let's quantify that - he's obviously still a great chopper, but his form can be hit and miss. it's not what I'd label consistent, personally) - well, that and his attitude!

Yuto uses backhand attacks more often than Wang Yang too.

Winning by playing an almost classical defensive game... Nice! His movements remind me of Mutsushita and that little finger in the final set: Chtchetinine in his encounter with Rossi. Epic! :P

Look how well Boll places the attacks to Wangs body. Lots of precision.

This match is not the most well played match (concerning technique) but it is one of the most entertaining and exciting one I have ever seen. Listen to the crowd :) : http://tv.ttbl.de/07-04-2013-pluederhau ... galey-wang
