I can answer that and BH can correct me if he thinks I am wrong.
Blade speed and contact point. That is the key.
If you look at his bat at "contact", it is "almost" flat, he is hitting the ball "almost" on the bottom of the ball. You can do serves where you actually hit slightly "in front" of the bottom. Blade speed determines how fast you can spin the ball. Contact point determines what type of spin. Of coarse, the hard part is moving the bat REAL fast and not sending the ball in orbit. I think of it as trying to burn the logo off the ball.

thats what i was thinking, but it's so hard to time it right. I think the reason the pros like ma lin throw the ball so high when they serve is because they can focus more on putting spin on the ball and nolt as much as propelling the ball foreward.
