I am playing Attack 8 on the backhand of a BTY Kong Linghui special blade, and use it for a block/chop/hit modern defender game on my backhand side. I might be going back to the states over new years to see my family (and play two tourneys). Are they very strict about the US approved rubbers list? Armstrong isn't on the list. If so, could I substitute millitall ox for the Attack 8?

My guess is nobody would know. As long as your rubber isn't made by that Neubauer fellow, people don't seem to know legal from illegal.

It depends on how many stars the tourneys you plan to play are and how closely they inspect rackets. At best, its a random check anyway. There was a case recently of a 2300-2400 level player that was playing with Hallmark Original LPs. This LP is not on the ITTF rubber list, but was on the USATT rubber list. At one tournament, the tourney official would not allow this player to use this rubber as it was not on ITTF rubber list. USATT has since removed this rubber from their list (probably was an oversight on their part to leave on their list in the first place.)

Can you play with Armstrong if its not on the USATT list. Probably, since its unlikely any one will check. Even if someone checks, it is up to the tournament officials to decide whether they want to enforce the USATT list over the ITTF list. Take a print out of the latest ITTF approved rubber list in case you need to support your position. It won't guarantee the officials will agree with, but at least you will have something to argue your case, if questioned.

Yes, I am planning on playing both of them. I've played them both the past few years, and right now I don't see any conflicts that would prevent me from doing so again. Are you going to be in the area for them? It would be cool to meet up and have a hit at them!

Yeah, I am originally from Chicago, and playing an event at the mccormick place is like heaven.

The Holiday Open is a GREAT time. They always have about a dozen of the best players in the world there to watch. That's a ton of fun. Then, they always have a good number of events to enter. Plus, the rate to stay at the Hyatt that's attached to the place is great, which makes the walk over to events a breeze, and you can just walk back to the room for a break in the middle of the day.

The only thing I don't like is the flooring. It's on concrete, so after a long day of playing and walking around, your joints tend to ache a bit. But, it's funny, of all the "major" tournaments I go to, it's always been the one that I've performed the best at, and the only one that I've ever won an event at. Plus, beating Filimon in the 41-point handicap event is a highlight that I'll never forget. :D

It stunk last year, the handicap event was after the event with the pros was over with, so none of them played in it. A friend of mine that I go with every year has played Hazinski, Lupulesku and Keinath in that event over the years. And, as stated earlier, I got to play Andrei Filimon. :D

I am gonna be staying at my mom and dad's house. However, I switch to the millitall, and love the felling it gives on chops and counterdrives.

Cool, hopefully you'll be able to make time to come on down to the tourney, watch the pros (who I assume they'll have there again) and play a couple of events!
