I bet you drove your parent crazy with questions when you were little

Yes I'm the same actually.. always wondering why it is so

Don't know the answer, but hopefully some of our pengrippers will...

Could be because pengrippers scoop a lot of shots close to the table when they push...Just seems natural that the edge they push forward the most with should be square with the table...

2 cents worth..lol

Square is for away from the table and round is for close. The square shape is also supposed to give a longer, wider sweet spot.

Now for shakehand, a small head means it's more maneuverable over the table, and probably more control.
A long head means it's more head heavy and better for hitting/away from the table.

That still does not explain why the square blades are mainly used by pen grippers who play both near and away from the table.

Shakehand defenders that change the size of their oversided blade to normal size seem to agree that this makes the blade faster.

I just started experimenting with J-pen and I had the theory that squared would have the sweetspot more towards the top of the blade, more away from the fingers for RPB.

Who?

I can only think of RSM, Lee Jung Woo and Chian Peng Lung at the moment.

As far as I know (Haven't seen much LJW and CPL), they're all mid distance ralliers.

The first bit is right, the sweet spot is definitely closer to the top of the blade.

The second bit, I guess it's up to the individual. I prefer the centre to be lower, so that I can use more wrist and have a faster action without feeling like I am dragging the blade around. Another point to consider is that RPB is better off the bounce close to the table than away from the table, due to the mechanics of it.

The rounder blades are better for quick hitting and blocking close to the table for Japanese/Korean style penholders as it is much quicker to change from forehand to backhand. If you compare a Senkoh-5 or Nittaku KVR to a Senkoh-1 or Nittaku Rorin you'll see what I mean.

The longer, narrower blades also have longer handles and you can contact the ball further toward the tip and the bat goes more quickly through the air for longer swings away from the table. But they don't switch as quickly to backhand as the shorter, rounder blades.

If you look at Japanese/Korean style penholders (like pips out hitters Kim Ki Taek, Lee Eun Hee, etc. versus inverted loop drivers Yoo, Kim, Ryu. Lee, etc.) there is a definite correlation between close to the table hitters and shorter, rounder blades and away from the table power loop drivers with their long, narrow blades.

Chiang Peng Leung is an exception, blocking well from close to the table with a long narrow blade, but he has plenty of power from it.

I actually really wish I could get a square headed shakehand blade. I've played just holding a Jpen like a shakehand, and the awkwardness of the handle aside, it feels quite nice. I could drive all day from mid distance like that, something I'm normally weak at with shakehand. I would just mod one of my blades, but the handles are just too thin. I could get one custom made though...

Hobbes, you can always go to Borko or Ulmo German. I don't know if Visse accepts special order also.

I would probably just stick with Jack Miller since I know he's reliable, and he really doesn't charge much, especially considering the level of quality in his blades.
