Hi,

This topic is to discuss which Brand has the best blade finish. Like i have seen blades from Butterfly, stiga and donic. The finish of BTY was far better than the other two, nice smoothing on the overall blade and a very smooth finsih, on the other hand both stiga and donic have a bit rough finish on both handle and the play area.

What do you think guys. Pour in your views....

Cheers,

MayaV

Stiga finishes are always rough. They're supposed to be that way I guess.

I would rank stuff like this:
Nittaku (good)
TSP (ditto)

Darker (Had a lopsided handle)
Yasaka (good, can be rough)

Butterfly (Seen uneven plies before)
DHS (good, rough surface)
Stiga (rough surface, uneven plies once)
Donic (as above)
Joola (as above)
Friendship (good)
Xiom (uneven plies, head a bit wonky)

Galaxy (uneven plies, rough surface/handle/edge)

So much depends on the wood and outer plies too...some woods are too coarse to get smooth... so the smoothest finish is not neccesarily the highest quality blade...

Most manufacturers have top-end and generic blades... the top-end are usually the highest quality...so you can't judge the brand by a single blade...

Only Silver can since he's probably tried more than half of every brand

Marketing.

Also, the majority of blades are composites, which are always popular.

Notice how that since the 08 line of blades came out, hype about the blades has died down? Most of the new blades are wood.

I think there's only so much you can do with 3+2 ply carbon /hinoki or carbon/composite stuff. After a while it's just a rehash of the last big thing.

In truth, finish makes you feel warm inside about your blade, but if it doesn't feel good to play with, then the finish means little. It may be some indicator of quality...and therefore suggest if the manufacturer has put effort into finishing, then they've also put effort into wood/materials selection and composition...but it still might be that you don't like the way the blade plays. Another blade may look like it came from the seconds box, yet play just how you like it. Might not have babe factor about it, but if it wins you games... who cares?

Then there is also the rubbers to consider as well into the calculation. Different rubber can completely change the characteristics of how a blade feels...and even how it looks. Some rubbers look a million dollars and can bring a bat up, where others can look shabby and bring a blade down. Again, if they look shabby, it may still be the best bat you ever played with.

So don't get too hung up on how a blade looks, but more on how it plays...for you!
