The Friendship W-1 defensive blade is made for a modern chopper/attacker style of play. It is oversized (length 16.5 cm, width 15.8 cm), with a good grip (total length 10 cm, circumference 8.8 cm, straight handle, rounded, and flattened so you will feel the angle of the blade), a good weight (95 grams), 5 ply (soft wood inner core almost 3 mm thick, in 2 layers of harder wood with its grain at an angle with the inner core for good stability, almost 1 mm thick, and on top 2 very thin layers of still harder wood which is probably meant to increase the effectiveness both of long pimples rubbers and of the attack with inverted rubbers; total thickness about 6.5 mm). The dwell time is enormous, the feel is "deep" (as opposed to "shallow", which is the feel of hard carbon-fibered blades) so you will have immediate feedback on contact with the ball, and the sweet-spot is very big. Speed is rated by Friendship as 58 (out of 100), which may be a bit too low, but the weight of the blade makes this hard to judge. Control is rated 95, which definitely is too low; my guess is 100 (my comparison is the Joola Toni Hold White Spot blade, which is rated 65 for speed and 100 for control). Craftmanship is excellent and the blade really looks classy. I have played it with Neptune Galaxy 0.7-0.9 mm (pink sponge) red and Globe Magic Wand 1.5 mm black, glued on with Neubauers voc-free contact glue (normal); I sealed the wood with hairspray. Blocking and attacking close to the table works very fine, chopping away from the table too; attacking from a distance asks for a pretty big swing and quite a bit of power, and is effective because of placement and spin, not speed. Although this is a rather heavy blade, it is well-balanced, so looping against backspin close to the table and flipping over the table (which ask for a lot of wrist-action) is not difficult at all; the blade handles very well. Spin-reversal is very good; but making spin is at least as good. In my opinion this blade is better than the Butterfly defense blades, because it hits crisper and has at least as much control; it may come very close to the Chen Weixing blade of Joola.

You can see it at eacheng Reb, I was tempted to try this one for quite a long time but that high weight always steps me away from it...

Yes, I got it from eacheng and they have a picture of it. Shipping rates vary according to your choice; I always choose air-light, which comes at 5 US dollars and 2 more for every additional item. They pack well; I have never had damaged goods. Delivery from China to the Netherlands takes usually 5 working days.

Nittaku, the weight put me off for a while too, but it actually proved to be a plus; I can feel better what I'm doing, so I am more precise. It may sound like a lot, 95 grams, but with an LP on the backhand it'll weigh less than the average "light-weight" attacker's bat, especially when the attacker has Tenergy max glued on it...

Nice review Kees!

I have not seen that blade, I think it's only available within China. I know some time ago there was some talk about a new range that looked like XIOM blade... perhaps this is one of them? I certainly reminded me of a XIOM blade...

As an update to the review: I have played now a while with it and compared it to a number of different set-ups and now it seems to that it is rated correctly for speed by Friendship. I still wonder about the rating for control, though. I think it is higher than 95, but maybe the thin and hard outer plies made the company rate it below 100. Because it proves to be pretty slow, it should do well with medium-fast LP's, so I'm going to try out a sheet of their chopping LP (Friendship 837), black, 0.6 mm on it.

I am not sure but I know it is still sold in China.

And after a little search I even found it on a US website.

I don't post a link because they are a competitor of OOAK.

Thanks for the consideration Kanzo, but you are completely free to talk about any other stores here, the forum is quite seperate from the OOAK shop.

This might be the blade I am looking for. I have been using the Defence II for a week now, and like it's defensive properties, however I have lost in hitting with my MP.
Blocking and hitting with the DII is very good, but hitting is less controlled than when I was using a hard blade. If the W-1 is crisper it should solve my problems.
