Woodworkers would know the pic of the one blade with a light colored section has what is called "sap wood".
Sap wood usually has a different density from the darker wood.
If I was paying that much money, I would want consistant color weather light or dark. :)

Thanks Hookshot so wat you say when buying such blade should look for
consistant color over the blades face thats make sence.

Another thing I would look for, (if I was in the mood for spending $200 to $400 for a blade) is the grain spacing.
For that price, you want perfection. Looking at the end of the blade held flat with the handle away from you, the grain runs vertical. The dark lines are normally harder than the light lines. The spacing has to do with growing conditions. There might be 100 lines across the blade, that represents 100 years of growth.
If there was 30 warm wet years and then 30 dry years, the spacing will show in the grain spacing. I have looked at the ends of logs alot cutting firewood and this is not uncommon.
During the 30, warm, wet years, more spacing. Dry years less.
Dry years, more hard layers.
Make a difference? I don't know. Just saying if I was to spend that much on a blade, I would be looking close.
The best gunstock wood usually is from slow growing conditions. :D

Hi Purger,
Not trying to knock your blades. I would love to have one, any one you have. I am just letting you know some things to look for if you can inspect them in person in the future. :D

I don't think I said that,,, but if you want some nice presentation grade Bastogne Walnut, I have some. A peice 40" by 7" by 3" is only $1500. Just enough for ONE gunstock or LOTS of blades. :D

Purger, thats a beautiful blade, and even if it is not 200 years old, its still a great blade, more so because you say it plays great. It looks good, plays great, what more can one want? :)

And hookshot, seriously, I am impressed at your understanding of woods, not just from this post but from a series of posts on other threads as well. Wow is all I can say.

If you made it a one ply,,,OFF++++ and HEAVY!!!!!
If used for a top sheet like a normal blade, Just like the one in my avitor, about Off. That blade has a thin burl walnut topsheet but many other layers of "other stuff". :D
