I once owned a Butterfly Balsa Carbo X5 soon after it came out over a year ago. After several months I found the handle too square shaped and the blade too hard feeling (from the carbon layer).

I mentioned it here:
http://forum.oneofakindtrading.com.au/v ... sc&start=0

If you're after a balsa blade the best I've tried to date (and currently use) is Juic Air Texa. The blade is 1cm thick so that may be an issue for some.

I've had a quick test drive of the Timo Boll Spirit and it's probably not all that different from other blades you're looking at...have a good reason to change as many of the best "up and coming" juniors in Germany use Timo Boll Spirit and play damn well with it.

I've owned both.

The Iolite is much faster and bouncier, but not as soft. The balsacarbo felt more of a stiffened soft balsa blade. I felt that the carbon wasn't quite stiff enough (not as good as the joola balsa/texalium blades) but better than the glassfibre reinforced balsa blades (TSP stuff).

The Iolite would be better for a fast attacker/looper, the balsacarbo for a more controlled looper.

vs a TBS:

Iolite: softer, bouncier, faster, lighter. Less stiff (3+2 vs 5+2 plies). Softer surface feel (Hinoki vs uh... Koto? Forgotten what was on the TBS surface). Thinner handle than the TBS.

BalsacarboX5: Even softer, typical balsa feel. Stiffened with carbon, which damps feel more than A/C imo. Not as "crisp" as the TBS, but feels more at ease looping due to the soft feel. Thicker handle than the Iolite & TBS.

hmm...
I find that ratings are specific to the individual, but when I played shakehand, I was a FH dominant close to the table spin looper off the FH, looking to force mistakes by spin variation and just a topspin BH hit (not a loop).

If we say that the TBS is
speed: 7
loop feel: med
surface feel: med hard

Balsacarbo X5: (~80g IIRC. I can look it up later)
Speed: 6. maybe 6.5
loop feel: soft (but a bit mushy, but this may have been my sample as I could literally deform the balsa a tenth of a mm by squeezing the plies together)
surface feel: med

Iolite: (80 or 82g IIRC)
Speed: 8.5
loop feel: med soft
surface feel: med soft

If I had to just give the blades a single number, I'd put the Iolite first, the TBS second and the Balsacarbo third, though, if you weren't after a faster blade the TBS is probably the most versatile.

Hm, so u think the Iolite has a soft feel? on butterflyonline it says it Hard. also, i read that the quality on the balsacarbo is crap. something about the carbon layers falling apart, is this true?

no idea. I only had mine for a couple of months.

Yes, I reckon the Iolite had a softer feel than the TBS.
