I don't get the critisism about an event like this. Obviously it is a celebrety "Let's see how bad we play this sport" kinda thing with zero seriousness. So what if the sexy movie star from Shanghai can't hit it over the table or so what if the plump US gent couldn't keep the ball on the table without the help of a navigation system or so what if the pro couln't attack but 1 out of 4 balls on the table vs the ex-Korean woman pro. Big deal.

What was more important was that the US team was respectful and everyone having fun - which was the whole objective of that event. Wally Green, that dude that many beat down for lack of skillz or being too brash.. He did the best job of all. Anyone notice how desipte his Dennis Rodman inspired hair, he played under control, smiled, and made respectful and prompt bows to opponent. he alone propogated the positives of this event by his behavior and showed a HUGE audience that USA can like this sport and be respectful.

Dominating the world was not an objective and hte population already knows the deal on that score.

 Thank you! It's a relief that at least one other person can see the positives in this.

If you want to do a celebrity against celebrity match, that's one thing. Sarandon against a Chinese celeb for a full match would have been interesting.

Sending an American team filled with unknown weak players, except for maybe one or two who were reasonably competent, to participate in a match that doesn't follow the normal scoring format against a Chinese team that was obviously better (with the exception of that completely dorky girl) was simply patronizing. They were even telling the Chinese players to dumb down their game further by not putting so much spin on it which painted the overall impression that Americans are hapless hacks.

What are the positives in this again?

Absolutely right Der Echte, this was fun to watch. And about dressing the part, I felt that Soo Yeon definitely dressed the part.

the overall impression that Americans are hapless hacks.

But the unfortunate truth is that US is a nation of "hapless hacks". On lots of occasions US Americans have posted in this forum lamenting the fact that there are 8,000,000* "basement players" but only 30,000* registered players. My maths suggests that there are therefore 7,970,000 people who play like Susan Sarandon = "hapless hacks".

To do the maths a different way would be to look at the world rankings**:
ITTF team rankings Men - USA 45; Australia 43; Belarus 10
ITTF team rankings Women - USA 20; Australia 30; Belarus 12
Men in the top 1000 - USA 14; Australia 20; Belarus 20
Women - USA 24; Australia 17; Belarus 16
Highest ranked man - USA 299; Australia 139; Belarus 8
Highest ranked woman - USA 58; Australia 143; Belarus 28

Population Base - USA 308,745,538; Australia 22,648,246 (est.); Belarus 9,503,807

Among other things, these stat's tell us that, in comparison with Belarus, Australia is pretty much a nation of "hapless hacks" as well! :D But we are competitive with a nation with a population 13 times bigger!

Now, by my impeccable logic, there has to be a reason why one country with a population which is only 3% of another is doing so much better. Or, to put it another way, why Belarus is not a nation of "hapless hacks".

One factor may be that TT has a higher profile in Belarus than in either Aus. or USA. How could we raise the profile? Perhaps some publicity?

* These are the figures I've seen quoted most consistently. Even if they're out by a bit, it doesn't really alter the imbalance between "basement" and "registered" by any significant degree.
** Not USATT rankings which only rank US Americans against themselves.
;)

While you would expect an event like this to be mainly low class TT, surely they could have given the really low level players a few coaching lessons before it so they could at least serve without it being a "bat chasing fingers" serve. If Susan loves the game so much, why hasn't she gone to the effort to learn some basics? Still, it was entertaining and I'm sure many positives in it. China's a long way to go to play a muck around Ping Pong event for a couple of hours

There is good publicity and bad publicity.

Sarandon against that dorky girl was good publicity, sort of a table tennis version of "Dancing with the Stars."

However, wide media exposure of unknown bad, noncompetitive players is bad publicity that just perpetuates the negative stereotype that table tennis is "social entertainment" rather than a real Olympic sport.

I don't think someone completely missing a slow ball with no spin that bounces two feet above the net is the image we want to put in peoples' minds about our sport.

What a crock. So you say all the murders and drug violence in Mexico are good publicity for Mexican tourism? Or bad reviews are good publicity for movies, automobiles or table tennis rubbers? Or product recalls are good publicity for manufacturers?

Ask Tiger Woods or Anthony Weiner what they think about bad publicity.

MNNB, in the long run yes. In the short run it's negative, but in the long run all that will remain in people's mind is brand recognition.
