RACKET CONTROL IS WORKING (WINK WINK)

Image

Interesting article at http://www.mytischtennis.de

Turns out that 4-5% of the bats were flagged by racket control at the recent ITTF world team championship, mostly from players from lower division countries who don't normally play on the pro tour.

"I could put my hand into the fire (guarantee) that this wouldn't happen to a Timo Boll," says ITTF racket tester Rudolf Bertz. "The players have all of the measuring instruments we have...many players push the minimum values to the limit of what's legal without ever crossing it." He says he believes the Chinese have hired a specialist solely responsible for preparing and testing their rackets before they are ever submitted to the ITTF for official tests.

He laughed as he recalled a less professional player from one of the lower divisions who failed the VOC test after buying some new rubbers from one of the manufacturer's sales booths and gluing it themselves.

Yeah. Real funny.

SPECTACULARLY WRONG

Distributors who write their own product descriptions sometimes don't just get it wrong, they get it spectacularly wrong. I just can't figure out whether ttdd.de's claim that Xiying 979 is faster than Palio CK531A is a greater crime against humanity than ColesTT's claim that Meteor 8512 is "max funky for non-treated."

FALL OF FENG

I wonder how far ITTF #5 female Feng Tianwei will fall in the next rankings? Not only did she get whacked around at the WTTTC by some lower rated players, she lost in the first round to qualifiers in not one, but two ITTF tourneys earlier this year.

MISCELLANEOUS TIDBITS

What to do with tidbits too short for their own section? Lump them all together into one paragraph.

http://www.laola1.tv/ will stream live European Olympic qualifying from Luxembourg on April 11-15….the North American Olympic qualifying from Cary, North Carolina, will likely be streamed April 20-22. Nothing official on that….Torbin Wosik was the big name listed for next week's challenger series, but it looks like he has been replaced….Former German women's national team member Elke Schall is a personal trainer now….check this out: http://www.elkeschall.de

Def-attack and me had a case (it's here somewhere on the forum) where the player lost points, but rose in ranking. My guess: she'll jump from 5 to 4. :D

I thought I'd read this artcle in full MNNB; unless you are german speaking I assume you used a translation tool to read it? Anyway, I used google translate.

http://translate.google.com/translate?u ... &sl=&tl=en

Obviously the translator tools are imperfect, but I derived a different meaning to you. The paragraph is (in full, unlike your selective quote)

Less professional when it comes to the nations from the lower divisions. "We were here during the week, a player who had bought the vendor booths and new pads they aired not long enough," says Bretz. The result: The emission limit was exceeded. No drama for the active, "She had appeared voluntarily control," says Bretz - laughing and happy.

My interpretation is that he was "laughing and happy" because the failure had been discovered in voluntary testing.....

I never said this was a word-for-word translation of the article, which is much longer. It just a few quotes and with some of the highlights paraphrased.

I guarantee you "und lacht zufrieden" doesn't mean "laughing and happy." More like the tester "laughed contentedly" after he finished telling a story of a woman who failed a voluntary racket test after buying some new rubbers from one of the manufacturer's stalls and not airing them out long enough. The expression "less professional" was written by the authors of the article introducing the tester's comments.

I fail to see the humor in a brand new ITTF-approved rubber off the shelf failing the VOC test or the comment that players from lower division nations are "less professional" without their own testing devices and paid tuning specialists.

Hey I just write this blog when I have a few spare moments. It's not like I put any major thought or time into it. If you want a more professional job you'll have to pay me.

LOOKS LIKE A REAL WEAPON

I am very impressed by this 3 video playlist on the use of a Chinese penhold bat with inverted and long pips. Lots of twiddling, RPH and other techniques. Watching this makes me want to break out my TSP Blockman that I'm still trying to figure out why I bought. Total length is 5:37.

If you like that, here's a 16 video series (that includes the three vids above) by the same guy and most are using shakehand. A real wizard with the paddle. Every time I think I know a bit about table tennis, something like this reminds me that there is A LOT more to learn. Total length is 25:10.

NEW RANKINGS

The new ITTF rankings are out. The top 5 for both men and women were Chinese.

For the men, Joo went from 5th to 8th. Liu Song dropped out of the top 100 and is now 107. William Henzell moved up 19 spots to 123.

For the women, Feng Tianwei fell to 9th. Irene Ivancan moved from 49th to 39th. Ni Xia Lian moved from 46th to 41st. Gao Jun got back in the ratings at 67th.

HE ZHI WEN NOT PLAYING IN SPAIN?

The next ITTF event is the Spanish Open on April 18-22 from Almeria, Spain. Joo Se Hyuk, Timo Boll, Jun Mizutani and Dima Ovtcharov are entered. Apparently He Zhi Wen isn't signed up.

No Amy Solja on the female side, but a few interesting choppers.

AMY IN THE OLYMPICS?

Neither the ITTF nor ETTU will allow the world's top antispin player Amelie Solja to represent her adopted country of Austria in international events. Happily the IOC apparently doesn't take that narrow-minded view.

I was looking over the list of players competing in the April 11-15 European Olympic qualifying in Luxembourg and was pleased and surprised to see Amy's name second on the list. There are 55 women competing for 11 spots and looking over the list I think Amy has a real shot at qualifying. Irene Ivancan is the biggest name, but after that the talent level drops considerably.

HE ZHI WEN'S WHEREABOUTS DISCOVERED

I thought it strange that He Zhi Wen wasn't competing in the Spanish Open. Turns out he will also be in Luxembourg going for an Olympic slot. Joining him are Evgueni Chtchetinine and Tomas Mikutis among others. The men have 71 players going for 11 spots and the competition looks pretty fierce.

EVIDENCE: VIDEO OF ITTF RULES BEING BROKEN

Here's part of Andro's massive multi-platform pre-LARC marketing campaign for the Rasant rubber, which should have voided this rubber's authorization. Not only did the ITTF not follow their own rules, they allowed Andro to break the rules rather blatantly at an ITTF event. Not all manufacturers were permitted this type of preferential treatment.

BIG NEWS FROM TTDD.DE

From April 1, 2012, the ITTF has approved a new long pip from SpinLord, the SpinLord "Blitzschlag." This rubber will appear at the end of August 2012.

The Blitzschlag has the same pip surface as the Dornenglanz, however the pips are softer (new rubber mixture) and the pip geometry is different. The Blitzschlag is slower than the Dornenglanz, as well as more controlled (above all in the serve receive) with a consistently very high disruptive effect. The durability of the pips is theoretically, on average, about 50% higher than the Dornenglanz.

Ruwen Filus dropped a few places, from 70 to 79, but most defenders/pip-players gained ranking points this time    .

Like T. Mikutis from 385 to 290. That was quite a jump. Wonder if he can get to 150 in a few years.
