No table tennis last week until Saturday running it at the community centre. Apparently we couldn't get a team together for last Friday so it was deferred to this coming Friday. Have since learned that I wasn't selected but that's OK.

Saturday at the community centre had all 4 tables going, and a phone enquiry from last week yielded 4 new people turning up, a father and 3 teenaged sons. One of the motivators was that it was to get one of them in particular away from electronic games. Anyway we had 5 under 18s and 8 adults counting yours truly.

Last night at the club I started off hitting with K? a lower grade hitter and that turned into a few doubles with JT & DZ. Then DZ & I played singles. Whether it was the effect of playing comp this year or what I seemed to have less trouble beating him 3-0. Then IM wanted a match which I went 3-0 then ultimately 4-1. Finally I blocked for half an hour or so against a looper M?, then went home.

In non-TT news we are in the middle of negotiations (3 weeks in trying to play it cool) to buy a house on a 10 acre mostly bush block around 2 hours from where we currently live. Our latest offer, of 737K (I so want to say 737Max!), hopefully won't stall, crash and burn.

Didn't play at the club last Thursday night as the cold had flared up.

Ran the Saturday afternoon at the community centre. When setting up all four tables I was asked why not only do three. I said we will need all of them. And we did. 12 adults counting me and 4 under 18s.

Went to the club last night, and it too was relatively crowded for a public holiday night. Started off playing doubles. Then a singles with J?, 3-0. Then a singles with ??, another 3-0. Then a break. Then another singles with the same ?? 5-0. Lastly a match with G?, a veteran newly moved down from North Queensland. We showed each other our bats - he was a combo player MXP forehand, pimples backhand. We played the 1st game 11-9 to me and he commented that he coulodn't see why I was playing with what I play with. My reply was holding the bat up and "11-9". Anyway I went on to win 3-0 as well. It turns out that he knows PU (for a while Roadrunner here) and is going back to the Queensland veterans tournaments, so i asked him to remember me to PU.

In non table tennis news, we have had an offer accepted on the house. We are doing due diligence with building & pest reports and are still waiting to exchange contracts, so can still be gazumped, ie it is not yet a done deal, but close.

Our 1st comp of the year is over so there were quite a few at the club last night. Played G? again, I think 6 games. He got a game off me this time. Afterwards we compared RC numbers - I'm 1350ish he said he was 1100. Played MD and lost 1-2. Played ?? from Mac Uni (he played Premier division while I played Div 1 in comp just finished) and lost the 1st 2 reasonably convincingly but came back to win the 3rd.

Also played a doubles with 3 lower grade players. One of them thanked me afterwards for playing at close their level to make it enjoyable for them. That was nice.

Bit busy lately ...
Saturday afternoon had no under 18s but still had 10 attendees, so all was good.

Monday night at the club was very quiet - only 6 there. Consequently I played CJ 3 times for 3-0, 2-1 and 3-1, then went home relatively early.

Last night was a bit better. Played ?? first up, another left hander (there was 5 out of 7 left handers at one stage!) for a comfortable 3-0 after extended warm up. Then G? next up and lost 1-2 in deuce. Then I had a hit with JP, and lastly another match with G? which started as best of 3 (2-1 to me) then extended into best of 5 with change of ends at 5 points in the 5th for a 3-2 win for me.

Yesterday I also got the other key to Manly Vale so that I can be more flexible in getting someone else to open up and close down if I am otherwise engaged.

Busy and sick again ...
Last Saturday at the Community Centre was good. We had a tennis player call in on the way home from tennis who I encouraged to have a go for free. She stayed for quite a while, insisted on paying, and promised to be back with friends next week. We would have had 10 players all up so that was the rent paid for.

Towards the end I was feeling fairly sick with the act of swallowing hurting, so was less than impressed with self that I had left house keys at the centre and had to go back for them when I got home. Went to the doctor next morning and didn't go to work on Monday. Didn't feel like TT on Monday night nor could justify it to myself after not going to work. Missed a non-TT commitment last night, and won't be going to the club tonight either.

Still waiting for the minutes from the ITTF AGM & BoD Meetings earlier this year (21-28 April to be exact) to be published on the ITTF web site. Here is where they should go:

Back from being sick again.

Saturday at the community centre, tennis player came back with friends indeed. One had played for England as a junior and knew and played with Drinkhall and Knight, and knew Pitchford as a younger junior. It was the first time he had picked up a bat in 4 years, and he had never played with plastic 40 or 40+. We drilled his forehand to my backhand for a while, then tried his backhand to my forehand before switching to backhand to backhand. He beat me 1-2, and I suspect he went easy on me for the one I got. For some strange reason I invited him to the club :), but he regards training etc as too much work. We will see.

Hope to play at the club tonight.

Last night at the club we started off playing doubles - MD, JC, AF & myself. We (JC & me) lost 1-2.

Next was a singles with JC. He was a little out of practice so I managed a 2-1. Later was with MD. Again, he was a little out of practice for a 2-1. Then I had hits with ??, a lady with a toddler whose sister was looking after the toddler for the night, and J? another lady with children roughly the same age as mine.

Last was a singles with G?. Now in my experience there are some players who just know they should beat you. I regularly play with 2 such, CJ for 1-2 years and G? only for the last few weeks. Anyway I took him out 3-0, then he asked for another game while the other tables were being put away. Another 1 to me for 4-0.

No sign of the ex-England junior :(.

Local association meeting tonight - I will raise the apparent change of Ratings Central to being on a commercial basis, and another association providing umpires for finals, among other items.

I read somewhere that Ratings Central was going commercial. Before casting more nasturshums I will have to verify where I read it, I suppose.

I have received an email forwarded from our RC guy.

Here is the text:
-------------------------
Recently Ratings Central has changed to a paid service with payments due in January 2020 for 2019 submissions.

In light of this, the TTV Ratings Central Committee has put forward a proposal to TTA for them to discuss such payments on a national level.

As such, I suggest that you delay any thoughts of payments prior to January of 2020.

If you would like to know more about this you can contact Kameron Chan (TTV Ratings Central Committee Chair) on [email protected]

Interesting, thanks for that!

I hope they don't make it too expensive, and take into account those association that already made donations for the service.

About RC, apart from my thinly veiled addition to the lounge here, we have decided to wait and see.

Last night got to the club late (non-TT agonizing over non Council approved additions etc to a property we have had a conditional offer accepted on, so invoking the condition to get out of it :) ). Played G? (one of 2 who think they should be able to beat me) for a 2-1 win. Played a couple of newcomers, D?1 & M?, 3-0 just by pure retrieving, followed by another newcomer, D?2, a penholder who I had to play reasonably against. Played R? for 3-0 although the play was fairly close, followed by a doubles between D?1 & myself against G? & J? which we lost pretty badly. Then another against D?2, finishing up with a hit with K?.

Steeling myself up for more real estate stuff (reaction from RE agent who has been harassing us & our solicitor, and more inspections etc).

<non-tt> Pulled the plug on the real estate purchase so back to real estate porn, er pictures>

OK ran the community centre thing on Saturday afternoon. No ex England juniors, more's the pity.

Had a TT enquiry as I was leaving the building at work - almost missed the bus home. Told them about the community centre on Saturday arvos and the club on Monday and Thursday evenings. They were quite excited about playing that night.More about that later.

Played at the club. First up was J? (have been referring to him as G?). 3-0 as per usual. Then a blast from the past FC, who was yet another to have to take time away from TT because of shoulder injury. We warmed up and then played. 2-1 to me. He is still getting his touch etc back, then he will be beating me like he used to. Then a doubles with FC & I v MD & AF, with us going down narrowly 1-2. Then another doubles, this time J?2 & I v J? & J?3. I think we won 2-1. Lastly was yet another rematch with J? for another 3-0.

When I got to the car I checked my mobile to find I had a missed call and a message. The message was from the earlier TT enquirer saying no-one was there. I texted that we were there and where were they. They had turned up to the community centre. After more texts, they will be at the club next Monday night.

Another night at the club last night.

First up played KK combo bat lady for a comfortable 3-0. Then J? (one who thinks he should beat me) for a 3-0 win. Then a doubles with 3 penholders for a 0-3 loss. Then a singles with W? where I played the first game left handed and the other 2 right handed for 3-0. Then a doubles which we lost. Capped off by 6 or 7 - 0 against J?.

In between games had a talk on tactics with a couple of members. I pointed out that when I play against players I ascertain whether they prefer or hate hitting forehands where the ball is spinning in to them or away from them. I gave them an example where I regularly hit with a guy where I hit an off (LH) forehand to his (RH) forehand and he has trouble returning it vs a straight or hooking forehand. They mentioned placing the ball at the playing elbow which I concurred with. I also explained to them having 3 serves that look very similar but with 3 different characteristics - under-, top- or no-spin. I think that is where I get a lot of points, even against pimple receivers.

The usual gang were at the community centre on Saturday afternoon. Covered costs.

The enquirer from last week turned up at the club this week. They had a Sunflex premade, made worse by being old enough for the rubber to start oxidising. I gave them a hit, followed by them playing in a doubles then spending the rest of the night hitting with another similar level player. I did show them the difference in spin between her rubbers and mine by getting them to drag a ball across their rubber then mine to feel the difference in grip. I also pointed them in the direction of getting a middle of the road non-premade set up from a reputable supplier.

I had a doubles with JF v L? & K? which I think we lost, but was fun anyway.

I finished up with an extended number of games with MD who I either didn't lose any to or only lost 1 of the first 2. As i explained to the enquirer afterwards, MD is the regular player with the best style and touch, while I was arguably next best there but don't go for the shots nearly as much being an eponymous retriever, although i did manage to give him a couple of unreturnable forehands with the T05H.
