I suppose it must be in the world of table tennis, I don't really know.

But like I say, is it best to buy at a store or online?

Right. Blades are those non-rubber ones, correct? Hmm, I wonder where I can go nearby where I live...

Anyway, thanks for the tip guys! I'll post a picture of my bat once I get one. ;)

blades are the bare bat, without rubber on it. You need to put rubber on both sides (or at least one, if you're a penhold) and they need to be of different colours (one red, one black)

Well, I reckon I should start with a pre-rubbered one before I go doing stuff to blades that I know nothing about...

Looking at the pictures, I can't see much of a difference, but I do know that I don't use my thumb. I tend to use my index finger where most penholders would use their thumb. Is that a bad thing? It makes my serves easier to perform across the table...

This is called the V-Grip....
Notice that the blade fits between the middle and index fingers, is this similar to yours?

Well, not really. I'll try to describe it as best as I can. The base of the bat lies inbetween my index and middle finger. But instead of holding the bat sideways like shown in the picture, I have the wider part of the handle resting inbetween my index and middle finger, so the end halves of those fingers are resting across the face of the bat.

Better?

oh I get it. whack the paddle head down, handle pointing up. stick the handle between index and pointer and put them over the the front side. rest the rest of the fingers on the back.

Anyway, that seems fine for backhand, but it's useless for forehand topspin.

Hmm... well, maybe I should experiment with other penholds and maybe even shakehand.

Hi fishy,
Somewhere in London, there is bound to be a club. At your stage, you could save about 3 years of experimenting if you could visit a club and talk to a seasoned player.
One of the first things to learn is a proper grip. Even if you do not play at the club, you can see what works and why. Talking to a good player will save you tons of time and more importantly, breaking bad habits later on.
Table tennis is fun at any level but we all strive to do better. Having the best equipment is not as important as having good basics. Watch all the videos you can find. Talk your parents into getting you a training DVD or book on ping pong. Either will speed up your learning curve.
No matter what, just enjoy the sport. It is one you can do all your life and don't have to be 6' 4" tall or 280 lbs to play well.
This forum is one of the best places to get info. There will be differing opinions here but after a while you will be able to sort out what is good for you.
Have fun!!!!! :D

Hi Fishy,

If I was you I'd try to buy something off ebay that's on auction. A lot of good bats come up that are second hand. There was an auction for 2 bats on the Australian site the other day that saw them go for about $35 (about 16 pound I guess). One was a 3 month old Sunflex used twice (in magnificent condition) and the other a Halex. They both looked quite nice. Of course make sure if you bid on second hand you know a bit about what you are getting, so raise it here on the forum and maybe let us see the item you want to bid on. We may be able to advise whether it looks any good or not. Be patient and you will get something good I'm sure. And if I think you should aim to get a shakehand at this stage as you can play penhold with a shakehand, but it doesn't limit you to not trying out shakehand (which you might eventually suits you better). If your hands are very small then a penhold bat may be possible to play shakehand though, so keep this in mind too.

Cheers,

Reb.
