I was thinking about it tonight and wondering if there is a dominant personality type among TT players. Do you even know your personality type? The basic types are Introverted and Extroverted. Introverted people are generally quieter types more likely to be shy and reserved. And also more likely to think deeply about something before voicing their opinion. Extroverts are more talkative, more outgoing and more likely to speak "off the cuff". There is probably a lot more depth I could go into on the subject but for the purposes of the poll, I think these definitions will do.

So which personality type would you classify yourself under?

I've been told by my wife that I qualify as an extrovert, and she's probably right. So I have to go with that answer.

Im proudly an introvert.
In fact, Im introverted to the point where I am more comfortable making posts on the OOAK forum than making a post on facebook for my own friends to see!

I think if there's one thing I've found, it's that table tennis players (at least here in the U.S.) are rarely considered to be "cool" when compared to the normal population. In fact, many would qualify as nerds. Me included, I suppose. :D

I'm definitely somewhere in the middle, but it can fluctuate. As an introvert, I do like my own company, tend to do a lot of thinking and find myself being a bit of a homebody. As an extrovert, I like getting out into the world and meeting new people, tend to be overly talkative and find myself getting the itch to be somewhere else.

So, I think the poll should have had a third option. :P

Or perhaps allow multiple selection. (BTW, does the count of two qualify as "multiple"?)

Are you suggesting multiple personalities? That might explain things ... :^)

Funny you should ask that Reb... I've often wonder about that too! I was thinking we'd be mostly intraverts, whereas we'd become extraverts once online. Does not seem to hold water

I think of myself as more of an extrovert, but I definitely have my quiet times. most of the people at my club are pretty talkative. There's 2 guys I can think of that talk a bit less. Both of them are foreign, come to think of it. I wonder if that has any effect? Not that I'm against foreign players at all (I'm not racist, don't worry), I just wonder if they have he tendency to be quieter. One is Malaysian and the other is Polish.

I think the thread title also implies discussing personality types amongst the general TT playing population, i.e. elite players and players we might know.

I think the issue of introversion and extroversion has cultural factors. For instance, it could be argued that because Asian players are generally more introverted the dominant type in TT would be introverted. For sure, it's a rare player that wins a big game that doesn't exhibit extroverted characteristics, like shouting out or ripping their shirt off. Once the adrenalin is pumping people of all types will do things outside their normal type. It's how they behave in the locker room or when they're with their friends or family that is a clearer indicator of type.
