Hi all, I'm new to the forum. I'm looking for some help finding a video of a table tennis match. I don't have much to go on I'm afraid. I think it was quite a high ranking match, possibly even a final. The players were messing around and got to playing off the table somehow. They were told they must play on a table so one of them produced a half size table which they put on the floor and continued playing. They were then told they must play on the main table, so they got another tiny table half the size of the previous one again, put it on the main table and continued playing. That's all I have. I know it's not much, but if you've seen the match I think you'll know it from that description.

Thanks for any help you can offer folks

Rich

I think you mean the purkart and secretin table tennis show. Was great fun, I saw them in person twice. Several videos on YouTube.

Hi Elvis
I see what you mean. Just checked them out on YouTube. Amazing stuff. There's also a photo of them at the 1990 US Open on the floor with a whole nest of tables. They were definitely the originators of that sequence but the clip I saw, which I think was on the BBC, was a lot more modern and in a competition. Thanks for your help

I have seen several attempts at copying the Secretin/Purkart shows (don't even know whether they were the first with the idea).
I think Alois Rosario and Jeff Plumb of PingSkills did a staged match which went through a lot of those moves, but I can't find it right now. I'm sure that I have seen others too. Generally they are set in a competition environment, but from the props that come out during the match (mini tables, huge bats, hole in the bat face, etc.) it is clear that it is a staged act. Still a good display of TT skills, though, and for most non-players it is more entertaining than a regular match.

Hi Keme
Cheers for replying. Interesting. It seems from what you guys have said that what I assumed was an isolated incident is by no means unique at all. I can see I've got a lot of digging and Youtubing to do. Thanks for your help mate

There's also a fairly recent video of the Japanese team messing about for a tv program I think, e.g. making one "half" very small, and the other (with the presenters playing) much larger.

That bit where they jumped up on the table - I remember many years ago there was a story in the paper about a schoolkid who got killed doing that. The tables back then tended to fold in the middle like a book, which happened.
