Interesting. An Australian movie? Well, I suppose the director may be Australian... Yeah, these rockets are more of a Lao thing, that's why you find them in the NE of Thailand and in Laos proper. Not sure what they're speaking in the movie but it sounds like Thai to me. Then again Lao probably sounds very similar.

I'll have to go look for that movie.

Small ones!

I can relate to this! (Meaning it's within my means to build one... ) If you look closely, it's powered by a transverse rocket motor with its nozzle on the side. One is made of bamboo, the others are the familiar blue PVC pipe. These only have one nozzle (unlike the bigger ones, with two or more, up to six for the gigantic ones). Love the launch technique! They're set up to explode at the end of the motor burn (probably loose powder under the end caps). The crowd is probably 1) making bets and 2) drunk. As I read elsewhere - "young Thai men, alcohol and explosives - what can go wrong?"

Speaking of launch techniques:

Looks like Buddhist monks do it, too! Looks like some sort of religious ceremony going on in the beginning (prayers being said over the rockets or something of the sort).

Here are somewhat bigger ones (with two nozzles). Needs two people to set them off. These have parachute recovery (as simple as the flame front reaching the middle of the motor, where there's a hole, and it burns through the string holding the parachute in place).

I'm beginning to wonder at the "standardization" I see here - in any one of these videos I see circular rockets - lots of them - built to the same specs. But these specs are different from video to video. The ones in the second video are a yard across and are hand-launched. In the first video they were maybe 12-14 inches across and launched off a pedestal. In the third video, they're about four foot across and use parachutes for recovery. Which makes me think there are localized "rules" or "competition classes". They seem to have separate launches for the small ones, the medium ones, the large ones, the gigantic ones and the vertical bottle rockets (the non-circular ones). Which means it might be interesting when I go up next year, wonder what I'll come across. Probably depends on the town I visit. Each town probably has a launch for the GIGANTIC ones (either bottle rockets or circular rockets) and many side events for the hobbyists.

These things can hurt - in this video someone gets hit on the head by one.

Only remarkable due to the lack of enough of a toss (which violates the latest changes in the rules). Otherwise just fast serves... :P You see this where I play every weekend.. Ten years ago these weren't illegal, and these guys ARE "veterans" - they're just playing like they're used to playing...

Those look like those "bat-mittens" someone was trying to patent some time back.

How expensive is Lily???!!! :?:

And what impact do these things have on birds, insects etc?

When Amazon etc start delivering everything with them, I'm going to arm myself with a cricket bat and practice my hook over square leg.

What's amazing is her flexibility in the ankle. I think those skate boots are also modified to allow her to bend her ankle without putting any "edge" on the skates.
