It appears that the core router on my host has gone down for maintenance.

The scheduled downtime was for 2 hrs, of which just over 1 hr has passed.

Wow what a LIST! Daem.

Interesting to see H2 blue sponge about the same weight as Sriver el. To all those guys saying H2 was too heavy  . Beware myths! :D

That is an impressive list!

Hey Silver

6 decimal places seems a bit too much implied accuracy given the input data. If you are just 1g out in your weighing, the ratio will jump quite a bit e.g. 0.19xxx might become 0.20yyy. Might it be better to reduce decimal places to 2 say?

AF.

Didn't Engineering 101 include a session on limit of reading and multiplication of errors or some such? I know it did when I did it (but that was a loooong time ago now) :D

yep, but it's all in g/cm^2.
All measurements are in mm (accurate to +/-0.005mm, your typical vernier caliper) and g (+/-0.05g)

Eh? I measured the size of my rubber with a ruler for which I can barely see the mm mark, let alone 0.005mm. You're hardly going to use a vernier for length and width are you (or more to the point, what do you think people use who are sending you in the data?). Let's say people get this correct to nearest mm. Error = +/- 0.5mm

For mass, my postal scales read grams - limit of reading = 1g. Error = +/- 0.5g.

The middle 3 entries in the 'table' below show the range of results if just those errors occur ie. from 0.2222 to 0.2185. This implies that max decimal places ought to be just 2. The two outer readings could result simply from careless weighing (say) and again suggest 2 significant figures only.

Uncut mass length mm width mm g/cm^2

61.0 165.5 165.5 0.2227 (0.22) [rounded to 2 decimal places]
60.5 165.0 165.0 0.2222 (0.22)
60.0 165.0 165.0 0.2204 (0.22)
59.5 165.0 165.0 0.2185 (0.22)
59.0 164.5 164.5 0.2180 (0.22)

Now, this all assumes that rulers are reasonably consistent around the world as to length. I wonder how accurate the various scales that people use are? I didn't get a standard weight with mine, so have no idea of the actualy accuracy of them. Could it be in the order of +/- 5% if taken across all scales used by people contributing.

Check out the following figures where the weight varies by 5%.

57.0 165.0 165.0 0.2094 (0.21)
60.0 165.0 165.0 0.2204 (0.22)
63.0 165.0 165.0 0.2314 (0.23)

Anyway, I suspect that such limit of reading, equipment variation and human error account for much of the variation in the table you have developed.

So what then can we infer from the table? Take the following excerpts:

Butterfly Bryce FX 0 2.1 red 63 0.214505 (0.21)
Butterfly Catapult 0 2.1 red 63 0.211936 (0.21)
Butterfly Cermet 0 2.1 blk 59.6 0.206486 (0.21)
Butterfly Ekrips Soft 0 max blk 60 0.202922 (0.20)

For all intents and purposes, you can realistically conclude from this that the first 3 rubbers have the same unit weight i.e. about 0.21g/cm2, and that the Ekrips is 0.01g lighter (although I'm not sure that that difference would make much difference to anyone!).

Donic Coppa JO 0 2 red 65.5 0.227985 (0.23)
Donic Coppa JO Gold 0 max red 68.5 0.238427 (0.24)
Donic Coppa Tagora 0 max red 53 0.187783 (0.19)

The JO at 0.23 is a tad lighter than the JO Gold (0.24), and both are much heavier than the Tagora (0.19).

So, that is my argument for only showing 2 decimal places in the table. I rest my case, your Honour.

(Of course, Silver runs the website that hosts the table, and he reckons that 6 significant figures is cool, so I probably haven't even got "standing" to argue my case anyway    )
