mmm yeah, forgot about that :P

Mine (which represents probably 99% of the data currently in the system) was done with verniers.

:P

Then I intentionally omitted the decimals :P

Let's say I use my digital varniers and calibrated to .01g <500g digital scale, and submit numbers. Using 6 zeros results in a more accurate gram per sq. mm comparison table.

However, Mr Friendly, Mr Enthusiastic, and Mr Happy-Go-Lucky also submit numbers to the table. The table does not specify who submitted the numbers. The more people who submit numbers, the more of a happy, fuzzy, mash, the whole table becomes. Eventually someone submits a sheet of Globe 999 weighing less (by their calculations) than someone else thought their sheet of Magna weighed.

If every helpful soul can contribute, perhaps 6 decimals is a bit hopeful?!

Perhaps the table could specify which entries are from calibrated sources, and give these double weighting in a final averaged weight column, for each rubber's colour and thickness?

Ie there are say 3 ratings for Sriver EL red max, but only one was submitted by a known-to-be-calibrated source. All three ratings are averaged, but the calibrated submission is treated as two entries instead of just one, during averaging.

We now have a final average figure for Sriver EL red max. Perhaps this final figure could even be displayed as the cut weight for a particular known blade- ie on Stiga Allround Classic: rubber would weight X g's, on a Butterfly Whatever: Y g's, and say an Andro Something Else: Z g's. This is very helpful to the unwashed masses (me included), who can't easily work out the area of the blade they own.

Last of all, you charge TT retailers for looking at your database. :P

SB9 - significant figures. All good thoughts - but Silver is a computer engineering student and after all computers are REALLY GOOD at producing lots of numbers. It sort of seems a shame to throw them away

And besides, if his assertion is true that most of the data comes from his vernier calipers anyway (BTW Silver, did you use a standard mass to check your scales?) then the averaging probably works out just as you suggest ... er, hang on, no it won't unless Silver has multiple versions of the same rubber.

I reckon if we go on about it, one of 3 things will happen:
1. Silver will think - 'a hah, those blokes are right, I better turn the significant digits dial down to 2';
2. Silver will think - 'shoot, I like lots of numbers, I'm going to leave it just as it is' :P
3. Silver gets a dose of 'I'm sick of people saying rude things about my numbers, I'm going to take them away never to be seen again'.

Now, we shouldn't rule out option 3 too quickly. Ever hear about Nikola Tesla? Back in the 1930s, he is reputed to have set up a vehicle with some sort of gadget on bus-bars which enabled the car to travel at speeds of up to 60mph and to keep driving around for a week or so. When people said "It's the work of the devil" or "Its a scam" - he packed his gear up and went home. To this day no-one really knows how he did it.

The moral of this story? Don't know really, but I think its a good yarn  But like all good stories, I might have embellished it just a bit! See http://keelynet.com/energy/teslcar.htm

Hey friends

Brand: Milky Way
Model: 9000
Hardness: 46°
Thickness: 2.0 mm
Colour: Red
Uncut Mass: 16.6 cm x 16.8 cm
g/cm2: 0.272

For me is following interesting too:

Topsheet thickness: 1.6 mm
Topsheet hardness: 42°
Throw angle (low to high): 4 (5)

The difference between the hardness of the spong and the topsheet tell us many about the throw angle. Is the spong softer then the topsheet the throw angle is lower. Is the spong harder then the topheet the throw angle is higher.

Greets, Martin
