Pardon my ignorance; which is the forehand side or a new blade? The side with printing on it, or the blank side?

Thanks in advance

it doesnt really matter unless its a combi blade.
Rule of thumb is the one with writing on the blade or if it doesnt have than the one with the plastic insert should be fh... Doesnt usually matter if the blade is constructed equally.

It can make a difference when applying a red Ox sheet...the printing will show through. I've had some blades (the Xiom series in particular) that have a small logo on the backhand side in addition to the normal printing on the fh. I guess if one just had to use red ox LPs, any such printing could be sanded off. I just use black LPs and then it doesn't matter.

If the print of a blade shows through the rubber, does it meet with ITTF approval? If it does, might be nice to print something of your own there.

Perhaps a little off topic, but can I ask why we use RED and BLACK rubbers?

I can understand not using WHITE or ORANGE, but what's wrong with GREEN or PURPLE or BLUE?

Nothing wrong with those colours, but they had to decide on 2 colours that were clearly visually different, and I guess they may have taken common colour-blindness into account as well. Red and black was decided...

Thanks, Haggisv. Now I understand. Or do I? I suppose the game needs 'tough' rules like that. I mean, where would cricket be if they would have allowed aluminium bats?! Ummm. That's kind of different ... Hmmmm. Still confused, tho. Hmmmm. Need to sleep on that slightly dictatorial rule. Maybe I should stop using my rainbow coloured balls ... :headbang:

Green or blue rubbers would be the same color as the table... purple would just be girly ;)

What decides the FH side for me is the plastic logo (not sure it this is what it is called) embedded in the handle. I don't like the slippery feel on my fingers so I always have the logo on the BH side. On blades with logos on both sides of the handle, the bigger logo goes on the BH side.

For combi blades usually the side with the thicker ply is the faster forehand side.

Hey:

If no one has mentioned this yet...

Blades that are dark stained will show up as well if you're thinking about using red ox so you can't.

Oh well.
