My Curl P-1r started taking some damage the last couple of weeks. Tried to put edge tape on the area near the finger to keep it from coming off but it didn't help much. Doubt if its legal anymore, but I've put some scotch tape and edge tape over the area.

I'm playing the national veterans championship the coming weekend and would prefer not to change rubbers so close to the tournament. Last time I changed pips was just before a racket controlled tournament in November which resulted in some struggle getting used to the higher friction of new pips.

I've been looking in the technical leaflets for how much damage is allowed but couldn't find any specifics or if the allowance is higher when the damage is near the handle.

Here are some photos:

Technically speaking the sheet is illegal, because the rubber is not covering the whole of the blade. However, most opponents wouldn't mind playing against the rubber because the rupture is on and near the logo area. I wouldn't mind. Maybe keep the rubber on the blade and if there are complaints, switch to your spare blade or carry a fresh P1-R (cut to the size of your blade)/glue with you. If they complain, you just attach the new sheet to your blade and let them wait until the glue is dry. That'll teach them! :D

Thanks Lorre. That was my thought as well to bring a new P-1r and attach if necessary. 2nd racket unfortunately is a bit too different (joo see huyk and 1.5mm P1-r compared to my regular KMO + 1.0mm P1-r).

I'm not too worried about opponents complaining, but there has been some sporadic racket control before the team events before where my bat would probably be found illegal.

Now I'll just have to hope the local supplier has P1-r in stock.

Yep, spare bat and only switch when you are told to by an official.

I would begin using the new P-1R immediately to get it worn down a bit so the difference isn't so apparent, just incase you need to use it.

Just played a tournament, no one complained. About to replace it, though.

If you colour-in the missing bits with a black pen, it will look a lot better, and your chances of getting it through would be a lot better.

No, this one is several months old, I'm yet to replace DG on my main Defplay (I did put new sheet on VKM to try it though) - but as you can see has a completely different failure mode. My first DG sheet started losing pips in the center after ~6 months, this one indeed looks like someone was chewing it (not me!). Don't know if it's edge hits on the table or whatever - never had anything like that. Probably will move it to a normal-sized blade just to see how it plays there.

Thanks for the idea Haggisv. I extracted some topsheet from the previous worn p1 sheet and made this:

Cut the pimples to fit with the other. Maybe should have left some of the ones on the top.

In Italy the racket would be regular because the rubber-free part of the blade is covered by the hand that holds the racquet and the rubber mark is intact and visible.

Elius: Yes maybe its like that here too. I had some umpires and opponents look at the bat but there was no mention of the damage.

Tournament went very well. Thanks again for the help everyone!
