I was browsing Butterflyonline the other night and I noticed that in the description for the glue sheets they sold, it claimed that they increase ball control. Is this true? Any of you guys have experience using glue sheets, and if so, was there any appreciable increase in control? Also, can it be used to glue rubbers with sponge (can't remember if it was just for OX) The reason I ask is because if it does increase control, I'd like to try it out with a few of my long pips :wink:

I've used a couple before.
They're so you can put OX on without the rubber curling and what not when you use normal glue. Very handy. They don't increase control though, unless they're talking about your rubber gluing technique.

The extra control might refer to the fact that when you glue, you always stretch the rubber slightly, which could make it a little faster and offer less control...

I agree with silver, it's mainly useful for pimples, especially OX.

When I glue OX, I glue only on the blade.

I used to do that, but for some sheets I had trouble making them stick.

These days I stick them down with masking tape (cheers LawOCG!) and lightly paint the rubber very quickly, than leave it for about half an hour...

Then I glue it on, works very well...

I thought that maybe the extra thickness of the glue sheet (I think it was .5mm) would act as a small cushion that slows the ball down...ie instead of the ball bottoming out, it hits the glue sheet. I'm assuming it doesn't work that way and it's just marketing on butterfly's part, but I wonder are there any other products that would do such a thing (adding more control being its main purpose)? I'm curious because I've been searching for a good sponge thickness for short pip chopping. The thicker ones tend to be too fast, but the thinner you go, the more it starts to bottom out on the blade which causes it to rebound too quickly. Any thoughts?

Ive tried glue sheets before from butterfly. They are very handy if you want to glue ox pips. Other than that, they are a massive pain in the a$$ when it comes to removing. I would avoid glue sheets at all cost simply because its not a permanent solution.

I also tried gluesheets when I was gluing topsheets to sponges. If you just use the glue sheet, the whole rubber can still fall apart with some effort. But if you prime the topsheet and sponge with a few layers of glue, then use the glue sheet. You will find that its a very strong bond. So strong that you can ever take it off again :lol:

sorta defeats the purpose since your forced to use glue.

as for the cushioning effort. Its bullocks!....doesnt help at all. the glue sheets probably come in around 0.05 in thickness which does squat to reduce the ball going right into the blade. For short pip chopping I think the optimum would be around 1.2-1.5. Any more or less and you will feel the effects of the blade or sponge.

Not exactly in the right topic.
Have you tried gluing OX only the outer part of blade?

Imagine blade as dart board and then glue only 1-3 point anf leave 4 to bull-eye area unglue.

I tried twice and had extremely good result.

Heh, no I never thought of that...what kind of rubber was it, and how did the ball react to the unglued center section?

They claim they are reuable, how are they supposed to be re-usable? Perhaps the film stays sticky even after you pull a rubber off?

I agree with Law. BTY or anyone elses glue sheets afe fine, until you need to take them off. I tried them out when I first started serious TT and couldn't get any glue sent to me. There were OK, until I took the rubber off, which took off a lot of the soft wood on the blade from my DEF blade! NO more messing with glue sheets for me, not worth it. I would rather spend the USD $2 on a small bottle of rubber cement.

Did you try to remove the glue sheet from the blade? I can imagine that would be hard, especially since the defensive blades often have softer woods on the outer layers...

I assumed that when they say removable, they refer to being able to remove the rubber from the glue sheet, and leave the glue sheet on the blade, ready for the next rubber???

One time back then, the only thing I had to ahere a rubber to a blade was 2 sided clear tape 10 mm wide! I tried it out on some premade paddle blades that I had sanded off the sponge. Worked OK. Most of the tape stuck to the blade. I will never use a glue sheet again, unless I am convinced that that rubber will stay with that blade.
