Hey Guys,

Can I use simple transparent scotch tape for edge protection?

My tape comes off pretty soon and I don't want to spend money on buying fancy brand name tape (be it the thin or the thick sponge tape).

Thanks

I suggest electrical tape, still cheap and much better. They come in different colours too.

Is that what you currently use to generate your lightning shots in spite of resistance from your, no doubt, shocked opponents?

I use Donic edge tape but after reading your response might consider electrical tape from now on

But don't you have problem with the width of the tape? electrical tape is about 18 mm in width and the racket edge is about 10-12 mm. Do you cut the electrical tape in half before using it and if so then doesn't that become cumbersome?

Use gaffer's tape or some other cloth tape (duct tape, binder's tape). These come in various colors, and you can easily tear strips of the desired width off the roll.

Other tapes I've used in the past were art tape (you can find these in stationery supply stores, comes in various widths and colors) and decorative tape (same source and comments).

If you are prone to whacking your blade against the edge of the table and want some padding, try molded weatherstripping tape, such as this:

It's a foam material so it's fairly light. The D or E cross section tape should work fine. Comes in black, brown and white and in various widths (the 9mm should work fine for most applications).

Some good alternate suggestions by Isk. If you use electrical tape, yes you will have to cut to required width and it may be worth cutting a few extras whilst you are at it for future requirement using a board, pen/pencil, ruler and stanley knife.

I have used bookbinding tape, comes in many different widths and colors. Very durable and cheap.
I have also used silver or gray colored duct tape, nothing I found comes more durable than that and cheap too.
Now why do I use table tennis sidetape? Oh they come free when I buy blades, rubbers, balls and stuff he he. Freebies.
No I haven't tried transparent scotch tape.

The regular tape which I had ordered kept coming off and one day I got irritated and removed it completely and it just so happens that some scotch tape was lying on my table when I did this and thought why not give it a try and it fit like hand in glove

I think you just discovered something here!
Actually I had a similar idea 2 years ago to use coloured electrical tape. And it works.
