Some rubbers are difficult to remove from blades. If rubbers are very old they can be hard to remove, or some glues make it difficult to remove.

I've resorted to sanding the rubber/sponge off the blade before, but this needs to be done with great care to (1) ensure no excess wood is sanded off, and (2) it's not done uneven so the surface is no longer flat.

I've also used chemical before like turps, but this often creates a mess of goo.

So what are your tips for removing rubber from a blade that are hard to removed?

To get glue and sponge off, use an old rubber. Rub the surface with the rubber. It will remove most glue and sponge without damaging the blade. Lay the blade flat on a table with the handle off the table. Then you can press hard without cracking the blade. :)

It's easier with a rubber eraser. If you get the sort with the grit in it (meant for erasing ink) it's even better. DON'T use the eraser on the end of a pencil, unless you're a masochist.. As for chemicals - I've found Ronson(tm) lighter fluid works well, when it dries there's no residue from the fluid (though there may be rubber goo).

For me, Acetone (a.k.a Propanone) has almost always done the trick.. For more stubborn glue-residue or bits of sponge, I'll use fine-grit sandpaper, a hard eraser, or even my thumb/palm..

This rubber is being a nightmare to remove. And I haven’t even started the other side yet!

I know that this sounds a little odd... I just needed to do this. I think I had a situation where the water a based glue had a reaction with the whatever sealer the dealer used and it created a mess. l could literally see where the sponge was reacting to what ever was happening through the top sheet. When I tried to get the rubber off the sponge stuck to the wood so hard I was afraid of destroying the blade. The top sheets cam off and I had to ruin $100 worth of new rubbers. After my hands were raw from rubbing the sponge off and not getting very far I wasn't sure what to do.

I ended up using the heel of a slipper/shoe that had a soft outsole. It still took some work but both the shoe and the blade survived. I needed to do both sides. In the end the blade looked great.

Good luck.
